While I didn't get to choose this place for my stay on my recent business trip, I'm embarrassed for the company representative who did. Rooms were nasty. Bedspreads were disgusting, and there was dirt and dust in the corners. The hotel overbooked and the first night they "upgraded" us to a suite which caused one of us to sleep on the sofa bed. It was horribly uncomfortable and there were no blankets, so it was rather cold in January. The next night we were placed in the room type we should have had. If you do stay there, make sure to ask for a room not facing a street because the noise is deafening and you likely won't sleep.
I'm not an expert on Manhattan hotels, by any means, but I would think staying in a Comfort Inn or Suites would be preferable to this.
Oh, and The Rare restaurant is nothing to write home about either. Crowded and the food is just ordinary.
Given what I know about Shelburne Murray Hill, I'd take my chances and hope for better with another hotel.
