Pros: Nice big rooms, friendly staff, good location, safe
Cons: Nasty smell in the hallway
The Bottom Line: If half stars were possible this would be a 3.5 due to the smell, but overall a very nice safe NYC hotel option.

| jsindygirl's Full Review: Shelburne Murray Hill |
On a recent trip to NYC, chelledun and I spent our first night in the city at the Shelburne Murray Hill in the Murray Hill neighborhood of NYC. The Shelburne Murray Hill is an Affinia hotel and is located at the intersection of 37th and Lexington on the east side of the middle of Manhattan. The hotel has a nice lobby that is not fancy but is very serviceable. Directly off of the main check in area the hotel has a comfortable waiting area complete with flat screen TV and comfortable couches.
Our check in went very smoothly and we were able to check in early which is always a big plus. The common areas of the hotel are plain but clean and well lit. I only had one major complaint about the common areas and the hotel in general - the absolutely horrid stench in the hall way leading to our room. To be frank, it smelled like a dead skunk. AND to make matters worse, the smell kept getting worse as our stay progressed. It was a very strong and very powerful smell and really detracted from our overall hotel experience.
Our room was large, particularly for an urban hotel room and came with a very comfortable king sized bed, large window with a view of a city garden, dated bathroom, and small mini kitchen. The bed was perhaps the most comfortable bed I have ever slept in and I am kicking myself for not checking to see what kind of mattress they used. The bathroom was clean but older and a little small. The kitchen was a surprise and had a mini fridge, stove, sink, microwave, and coffee maker. The room also had a large ironing board and iron and hair dryer.
In addition to the bed, the main sleeping room also had a table, desk, night stand, and large television. The room was nicely decorated and very quiet. We had very little noise from other rooms, hallways, or outside. Overall, it provided a nice quiet home base for us as we explored the city.
Services and amenities offered at the hotel include: room service, grocery shopping service, concierge service, high speed wireless internet, voicemail service, and fitness center. Also - the Shelburne Murray Hill is pet friendly!!!
This is a very nice affordable option in New York City. We payed approximately $150 for the room on hotwire, however, the room generally costs around $220 - still a very good deal. The hotel was clean, safe, comfortable, and had very friendly staff. It also has a restaurant called Rare on the first floor and room service available. The Murrary Hill neighborhood is a nice quiet neighborhood that is very centrally located to major sight seeing areas. Overall, I recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a nice hotel at an affordable rate. Now if only they could get rid of that nasty smell in the hallway!!!
