Nice Hotel, but Out of Place

Written: Feb 11 '02
Pros:Great views, Nice staff, Good golf course
Cons:Location, Quality of food
The Bottom Line: Not a bad place to hold a business conference away from downtown, but not a place for leisure travelers.

I'm not all that familiar with Los Angeles, but I remember thinking that the drive to the hotel from LAX might never end. When we finally arrived in the City of Industry, we turned up a hillside, away from the slightly strange neighborhoods and towards a gleaming hotel on the hill.

Upon first impression the hotel reminds you of something you would have seen in a Communist country. Not because it isn't nice, but because of the cavernous lobby which is deviod of people. It almost seems like they built this hotel just for the sake of building a hotel.

The staff was very friendly, and the catering office did a great job coordinating a meeting we held there. While the food for the event was pretty good, the food at the restaurant was marginal. The restaurant was like walking into a time machine and coming out in the 70s.

The rooms are nice, and mine had a very nice view. It was on the north side of the hotel overlooking the golf course with the San Gabriel Mountains in the distance. Although I only had the chance to see the snow-capped mountains for about 15 minutes due to the thick smog.

The rooms are also very large, just like the lobby, but they don't use the space very well. The area next to the sliding glass door was perfectly suited for a small loveseat and a coffee table, but instead was just an open space of carpet.

There is a golf course attached to the hotel, and one of my associates (an avid golfer) deemed it a decent course. The course is a nice amenity, as is the health center. The center was under construction, but it looked like it would be pretty nice when it was finished.
