UPDATE: Dec. 2007
Having recently sold my house, I have now spent about 20 days at this newly renovated, smoke-free hotel. The moment I walked in I noticed the modern, bright and cheerful lobby, a very pleasant surprise!
The rooms are tastefully furnished, with ample work space, a large plasma TV and of course, those "Sweet Sleeper" Beds.
The Club Room if you qualify, hosts a happy hour Sundays through Thursday (5:00 to 7:00 pm), and hor's d'ouvres are served as well as soft drinks, beer, liquors and wines. Very nice, indeed, and the happy hour is very popular with the guests. A continental breakfast offering a variety of hot and cold foods is served daily M-F for those in the Club Room level.
I'm very pleased with the service, the rooms, quality of food at the restaurant. The fitness center and business center have also been updated.
I highly recommend this hotel for the business and pleasure travelers.

Original Review:
After hurricane Rita visited Houston, we found ourselves without electricity and our home had become a sweltering sauna. We booked a room at this hotel which had electricity, but we were told had limited staff and sparse food supplies.
We arrived around 1:00 p.m. with our dog in tow and we were welcomed with open arms. We found out many of the guests have been living at this hotel since Katrina, others were trying to get away from Rita but due to impassable roads, could not get very far, and the ones like us, who stayed in Houston to ride out the storm, but had no electricity.
While eating lunch, I spoke with various staff members and learned that the majority had sacrificed being with their families during hurricane Rita in order not to abandon the guests; some of whom had already been through so much just a few weeks ago. Most of the staff has been working shifts of up to 20 hours with little or no rest due to the increased guest volume.
What really touched me was the fact that not one of them was frowning, or complaining in any form. They were serving guests with smiles on their faces! Some of the guests I spoke to also said that the staff members have been incredibly kind to them.
I investigated more and learned that the hotel was scheduled to receive provisions the day before Rita was to make landfall, but it did not happen as the supplier said their drivers did not show up. In spite of limited supplies, the hotel opted to serve limited, buffet-style meals in order to maximize the supplies and still provide nutritious meals. The hotel was also providing meals to the Houston Police as most area restaurants were closed.
There was palpable air of camaraderie amongst the guests and the staff members; it was such a great thing to be a part of! I also learned that as a gesture of goodwill, the hotel had reduced its customary rates during this time of emergency.
At a time when some of the local hotels decided to close their doors (pending hurricane Rita) and asked guests to find alternate accommodations, the hotel management decided to continue to serve its guests and take in any others who might be in need of their services.
We highly recommend this hotel to people doing business in the NW section of Houston. It appears that it has recently been renovated; our club floor room was attractive, cheerful and impeccably clean.
The hotel does have a pool and sauna but perhaps it's not best-suited for vacationers.
We are Starwood members and as such, prefer their properties.
