About Me:

A Worthy Hotel While You Are in NYC

Written: Jul 07 '04 (Updated Jul 23 '04)
Pros:Near Times Square, friendly staff, Security by the elevators, CLEAN.
Cons:Charge for Gym, Could hear street traffic form 15th floor.
The Bottom Line: With a great staff, being close to Times Square, and having a nice sized clean room I would go back as well as recommend staying here.

For the past few weeks I have been in New York City. I wish I could say it was for pleasure but it was for business. I was actually up there twice, each for four days during week and a half time period. Each time was for a convention at the Jacob Javitz Center. The conventions aren’t important; what is is where I stayed. On the first time I was at the New York Sheraton Hotel and Towers.

The New York Sheraton Hotel and Tower is located on the south east corner of 7th and 53rd; this is just a block away form Times Square. From the outside it looked like just another tall building in the city. The only thing that gave the hotel away was its sign over the entrance way. After spotting the sign I parked in the attached garage for $34 per day plus 18.5% parking tax (ouch). FYI: when traveling west on 53rd the parking lot is before the hotel entrance.

After parking I entered the hotel lobby. The first thing I noticed about the lobby was how huge the lobby is. My best guess is that is about 50’ wide and about 150’ long. It was nicely furnished with couches, love seats, chairs, tables, and plants. The carpet was bluish with gold and red patterns sown in. Cherry wood pillars were scattered about the lobby. The ceiling was decorated with about 6 chandlers. In the lobby I noticed Streeter’s Café, a gift shop, a bar, and a nice restaurant.

After looking around I went to the reception desk to check in. The staff was courteous and professional. She explained that my $299 a night room was being paid for by my company. All I had to pay for was incidentals such as phone calls, room service, the garage, and meals charged to the room. Don’t worry my company reimbursed me for those expenses. After getting to the reception desk I was checked in within five minutes.

Now that I was check in I decided to head to my room. I first had to show my room key to security before I was allowed to proceed to the elevators. I was on the 15th floor. The hotel has about 45 floors. I got to my room and opened the door. I surprised to see room being as large as it was. According to some papers I had the room was 253 square feet. My room had a queen sized bed which was very comfortable. There was a desk with a high speed data port on the phone. The room also had a television, coffee/tea maker, iron and board, a safe, full length mirrors on the bathroom doors, a hair dryer, climate control, a window over looking 7th, a nice sized closet, and a nice sized bathroom.

All the furniture: the desk, the head board, a chair, the night table, and the armoire that the TV and Coffee/Tea maker were in, were all made form cherry wood. The iron, ironing board, and safe were all tucked away in the closed. The hair dryer was in the bathroom. The bathroom also had a full sized tub, a sink with a full length counter, a full length mirror, as well as the toilet. The hotel also provided soap, shampoo, conditioner, hand lotion, toilet paper, and tissues for those with runny noses.

The windows were covered with heavy curtains that blocked the outside light. This feature and the comfortable bed made for a good nights sleep. In the morning I was able to get up with the help of an alarm clock on the night table. The traffic outside was also a contributor in helping me get up. Even though I was on the 15th floor I could still hear the noises form the street. I wasn’t too happy about that. Anyway I got up every morning and took a shower. The pressure and heat were perfect. The vent in the wall was not. The problem with the vent was that it didn’t really help prevent the bathroom form getting steamed up. Oh well, that really was no big deal.

After getting ready I always went to Streeter’s for a breakfast buffet for $21.50. There was an assortment of pastries, cereals, eggs meals, breakfast meats, and fruits. All the food was good and service was excellent. The wait staff was always around to fill up my water and orange juice. As far as the bar, the other restaurant, and gift shop go, I never did check them out.

On the last day check out was a breeze. They checked me out as fast as I got checked in. The garage got my car quickly even though I lost my ticket. The best part was made sure that the car belonged to me before letting me go.

Over all I had a good experience at the hotel. The employees were friendly and house keeping was great in keeping the room spotless. The only things that I didn’t like were that the fitness room wasn’t free as it is in most hotels. If I wanted to go swimming the pool was across the street in the Sheraton Manhattan. Finally I didn’t like that I could hear the traffic from the 15th floor.

For me the New York Sheraton Hotel and Towers was a nice place to stay. I would defiantly recommend staying here since I heard the actual price per night is somewhere around $169. For its convenience to Times Square and its comfort it sure was a nice place to stay. If ever in New York City give this hotel a try

Extra helpful information:

The bed was soft with two semi firm pillows. The blankets weren’t too heavy nor were they too light. The linen was spotless.

The Television only received about 14 cable channels. One was HBO, some were local, and rest are mainly news channels. The 14 channels don’t include the games, premium movies, and adult entertainment that you can order for a fee. I never checked out the fees.

The radio had a weak antenna. I was only able to pick up about 4 stations. One classical and the other three were hip-hop. Needless to say I tuned in the classical station.

The safe uses a turn key. Most hotels have a programmable safe. The key is like the ones at amusement park locker rooms.

The gym cost $10 a day or $27.50 for my entire stay. LA fitness charges my sister $25 a month. I passed on the gym. I shouldn’t have. I gained some weight on this trip.

Ice makers are on every floor near one of the emergency exits. My floor was at exit “A”.I guess that is it.

The ice buckets given to guest are small.

I can’t think of anything I missed. See you soon. :)
