As I have been building my collection of cloth diapers, I have always wanted to get my hands on a CuddleBun. They are very hard to get and available only by announcement list or on auction, so I jumped at the chance when I received word that some were available.
The diaper I am reviewing is a “special edition” Cuddlebuns with a sherpa lining. The outside layer of this diaper is a knit, like T-shirt material. Sherpa is a very thick, soft material that resembles thick terry cloth.
What is it like?
When the mailman delivered my package, I was amazed how soft and cushiony this diaper was. I could tell it would be very absorbent. The workmanship on this diaper was great. The edges are serged in wooly nylon. The outer knit was a sage green with white hearts. The leg edges have a ruffly look – definitely a cute diaper for my little girl.
This is a front snap diaper. There are eight snap sockets across the front. You snap the tabs down onto them, just as if fastening a disposable diaper. Since this is a diaper that is supposed to fit all sizes (10 to 35 lbs.) there is a unique way to adjust the fit.
For small babies, you can turn down the front panel, which shortens the diaper, and reveals four snap sockets that you can snap the tabs into, instead of the row of eight. Also, on the outside of one tab is a set of snap sockets, so the other tab can cross over further and snap onto that, if you need to make the waist narrower.
I purchased a snap-in doubler to use with this diaper, that is also made of sherpa. The doubler snaps onto the inner row of waist snaps, so this couldn’t be snapped in when that row is being used in the turned-down mode.
CuddleBuns have elastic around the legs and at both front and back waistline. On the front is a cute CuddleBuns label showing an image of a cute cloth-diapered baby bottom.
Another unique feature of this diaper is a row of double stitching down the center of the diaper. It is decorative and it is supposed to help the diaper conform to the baby’s bottom more effectively.
The soaker pad is enclosed between the layers of the diaper body.
Our experience
Despite many attempts at using this diaper, it turned out it did not fit my 6-month-old daughter well. I tried numerous settings and experimented with the snaps. I even tried the fold down tummy panel that is meant for smaller babies, but this gave too much bulk in the tummy area. I tried to fold it a little way, then further down...but no luck in getting a better fit.
When I snapped the diaper, the tabs would have the bottom edge curl up instead of lying flat. The waist was droopy on all settings. It was also droopy in the crotch, and with that looseness, it would shift to one side and we had some leaks. The diaper was very absorbent, though, when it managed to be in the right spot at the right time.
Since this diaper did not offer the right fit and protection for my baby, I sold it on auction. Many people have great luck with CuddleBuns, but they did not work for us. I have had much better luck with diapers that fit a specific size range instead of a one-size-fits-all diaper. True, you have to buy more diapers when your baby outgrows them, but if they don’t fit effectively, it isn’t worth the hassle.
With the quality of this diaper, it may work well for your baby, so don't rule it out. If you get the right fit, you'll have a diaper that will last and last. If it doesn't fit, you can always sell it. Thank goodness cloth diapers have resale value!
