Pros:amazing audio for the price, it is simple to set up and operate.

Cons:The keyboard on the remote will not allow you to key in station frequencies directly.

The Bottom Line: The RX-4109 would be worth buying at twice the price. I am extremely pleased with the performance, and ease of use.

The Sherwood RX-4109 receiver is a two channel unit with a minimum of fluff that packs surprisingly excellent audio performance inside.

I discovered it at Radio Shack and it was on sale for $79.99. Since I was searching for a possible receiver for my study to use in taking audio feeds from the internet, the price was an attraction. I live far from the city and local FM classical music is almost extinct. I use my computer to stream classical music from the internet giving me a choice of stations from all over that supply classical music. I had owned Sherwood gear many years ago and knew that the Sherwood line was not being built in the US any longer, but the unit looked "right" to me and I purchased it.

When I lifted the receiver from the box I was pleasantly surprised by the weight of the unit. Per the specification sheet it weighed 19.5 pounds indicating to me that it was solidly built. It was 17 3/8" wide by 5 7/16" high by 14 9/16" deep. The included specification sheet stated that the receiver had 100 watts per channel at 8 ohms impedance from 20-20Khz with a terminal harmonic distortion of .04%. These are good numbers, if they are accurate.

Although the receiver looked simple to the eye, it really had a good array of features. It had AM/FM, CD input, Tape In/Out, Aux In/Out, and even a Phono stage, which is something that many receivers today have unfortunately dropped. The Aux In/Out can be used for an additional recording device or source. I used it for my internet audio.

The receiver has an interesting indoor antenna which is a single wire terminating in a push on F connector. I did not try it out because I connected it to my external FM antenna, but I am guessing that it would give similar performance to an inexpensive dipole indoor antenna.

The AM section uses an AM loop antenna that connects to the AM antenna leads and it performed satisfactorily. The FM section tunes in 10k steps, for example, 104.4, 104.5 104.6 Mhz and the stations were properly tuned. The unit comes with a remote control and you can program 30 memory locations. The display is easy to see and the unit gives an uncomplicated appearance. I once owned a receiver that had so many features you needed a college degree to operate it! This is a very user friendly unit with a low learning curve.

In keeping with the minimalist approach, there are no AC accessory outlets on the back of the unit for plugging in extra equipment. Since I use a surge protected power strip, this did not bother me. The only item that gave me some pause was that the keyboard on the remote only let you key to memory locations. You could not key in the frequency of a station directly, a bit inconvenient, but the 30 memory presets helped offset that limitation.

The main question here is how did the receiver sound?? In a word, BEAUTIFUL. The cleanest sounding integrated amplifier I ever owned was a Dynaco SCA-35 tube amplifier with matched tubes by Gold Aero. After I sent the unit to them for servicing it became the unit that had the cleanest sound I ever experienced. That is, until now. The sound from this receiver is clear and clean with an ample punch. In fact, it was so good that I decided to hook up my Technics SL-2000 direct drive turntable with a Grado Black cartridge to see how the phono stage performed.

Tonight I just finished listening to an album of Rubinstein's Chopin Nocturnes (LSC-7050) and the receiver was "invisible" with just a beautiful keyboard imaged on my wall and clear music coming out of it.

It is hard to believe that this kind of audio performance can be found today at this price.
