Reel it in.

Written: Jan 28 '01 (Updated Feb 05 '01)
Pros:This reel has a 5.0 to 1 gear ratio which is perfect for most lures.
Cons:On seldom backlashes, this reel is tough to get your fingers inside of .
The Bottom Line: If you like Shimano or havn't tried it, this is a great reel to use because it is smooth, durable, nice looking and affordable.

This reel is very similar to the Shimano Curado 200B( See my opinion on that reel for more info) except that this reel is bigger, which is better in this case and it has a different gear ratio. The Curado 200-B5 has a 5.0-1 Gear Ratio which makes it slightly slower than the 200B and the 201-B which has a 6.2-1.

I like a reel with a slower and smaller gear ratio when I am pitching a jig or working a rapala or any top-water lure. Any lure that I prefer a slow retrieve with I prefer a slower gear ratio. That way I don’t have to crank faster with a different rod, I can keep the same speed for each rod and reel combo I have and the lure will be retrieved at the correct speed.

Unlike how I like my gear ratio’s to be different I like my rods and reels to be similar or the same. I like getting used to one thing and getting better with that piece of equipment. Once you invest in good equipment than you should learn how to use it properly and stick with it. If you don’t like it or it doesn’t meet expectations, than it’s time to move on.

I recommend this reel for the average fisherman all the way up to the pro. This reel is very smooth and easy to cast. It has 4 ball bearings which keeps it smooth and I have had a lot of luck with accuracy when using this reel.

I have backlashed with it a few times but like always, that is expected. A real windy day or a light lure will get even the best of them. The one thing I don’t like about this reel is that if you get a nasty backlash it is hard to pluck and pick at with the closed face on the front part of the reel. Other bait casters made by Abu Garcia are easier to pick out but if you are good and learn how to use the reel you shouldn’t have that problem to often.
