Pros: Incredibly smooth, quick, reliable shifts. Very durable over the long haul.
Cons: Doesn't have the XTR "cool" factor.
The Bottom Line: All the performance you'll ever need and you'll still have some padding left in your wallet.

| sammy_marvelle's Full Review: Shimano Deore XT |
I have to be honest. I was a little skeptical about Shimano's performance line when they redesigned it pretty much from the ground up. Their old stuff worked great and I couldn't imagine why they would want to mess with that. Well, I found out when I took my new ride with a full XT group out for the first time in the spring.
The new stuff shifted faster, smoother, and more accurate than the old stuff, but what I have been most pleased with is the durability of it. I've put on almost 6000 miles on it in the last two and a half years, and with a little cleaning and a touch of lube, it still shifts like when it came out of the box.
There is a lot of talk (mostly among the techno weenies, I might add) about how XTR is a "must have" for racers at any level. I must profoundly disagree. Coming from a professional mechanic, XT is the most performance any racer at any level will ever need. The only real benefit you gain from XTR is the weight is reduced by a couple of grams, and the bushings and pullies are upgraded.
XTR is great for the professional racer who doesn't have to pay for it and get to throw it away at the end of the year. For those who have to watch their budget and ride on the same derailleur for more than one summer but still demand top-level performance XT is more than adequate, it's the way to go.
