imadad2's Full Review: Crash of the Titans for Nintendo Wii
Crash Bandicoot, a character that I thought was exclusive to SONY's Playstation gaming systems, has found his way to the Wii. I am so glad he did. A fun game that uses the Wii remote somewhat well and is very nicely done.
Neo Cortex has escaped and is up to no good again and captures Crash's sister and a voodoo mask which the name of escapes me. The voice for the mask is done by the same person who voices "Grim" from the cartoon "The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy".
So, Crash is forced to save the day again and he jumps right into the game and nice scenery with gusto. As with all Wii games, I want the controls to be more than just pressing a button to get the character moving. Jumping and striking are done by buttons. It was, to say the least, a little disapointing. Then the fun started. You must collect mojo which comes in different shapes and sizes after beating an opponent or breaking something to unlock Crash's moves. The best part of this game is hopping on the back of the monsters or mutants and controlling them in the game. You strike the creature and when it is stunned, hop on its back. Then you can control it to fight. Again, you hit a button to strike and you cannot jump. Pretty sad if you ask me, but each monster has a unique move for using the controler and it made the game a little more fun. You also gain the use of a hoverboard to move around the levels faster. It comes in handy at times when you get outnumbered.
The moves are similar to the creature. For the Teradactyl creatures you use the nunchuck and Wii remote and make a flapping motion to get the creature to flap its wings and hurt the enemy. The gorilla, you pound on your chest and thrust the controllers down to have him pound on the ground. Another creature you make a rolling motion to get the monster to roll around and flatten anything in its path. It makes the Wii controller a little more fun to use.
I had many flashbacks to the origional Crash Bandicoot game that was on the Playstation. The scenery had the same type of color scheme as that origional game and Crash moves in a similar fashion. They upgraded the looks of Crash though giving him a different hairstyle and what looks like tribal tats on his arms.
The gameplay is fun, but could have been better with more use of the Wii remotes. There are 20 levels to the story and it took my kids about 5 hours to get through the game. The fun thing with this game is that it can be played in co-op mode. A lighter colored twin Crash plays along side the origional and together you conquer the bad guys.
Just as you think the game is over and start to get mad because it was so short, there is a nice twist with the addition of Nina Cortex the daughter of the evil Neo. She changes the focus of the game to her from the evil father and it is a nice little twist. Evene with the twist the game is to short.
I did find the characters that had to be defeated a little repetitive, but the Boss's at the end of levels were all nicely done. The game also has some fun and annoying voice work in the minions that serve Neo and Nina. Their voices during fighting or right before a battle had me and the kids laughing. Also, during the scenes of the story, instead of just sitting there and waiting, you can change the icon from your Wii Remote pointer to different icons. Big red lips, Wigs, top hats, moustache, and buck teeth were just a few of the icons you could use to mess with the characters while they are acting through the story. It was a nice addition.
The camera work was done well, but when you are in co-op mode and you partner gets to far away from you, the camera zooms out to far and it makes it hard to see what you guy is doing and what the enemy is doing. A small nusience, but it is there. The levels are all well done and the scenery changes regularly. The tutorials at the beginning help you learn the game as you play. Also there are rocks on each level that help remind you of moves so you can more easily defeat the enemy.
The Wii remote is used well with all the buttons, but the motion uniqueness to the Wii system is only used well when you have "jacked" or taken over a monster. You do that a lot, so I did not feel that let down by the lack of motion use with the controllers.
Crash of the Titans is a fun game, but it could have been so much better.
