| Bryan_Carey's Full Review: Sierra Nevada Porter |
Sierra Nevada Brewing Company is located in Chico, California and it has brewed many award winning beers. This brewery is a pioneer in the world of craft- brewing. One of its best products is Sierra Nevada Porter, a dark, rich, tasty ale.
Basic Characteristics:
This product is best drank out of a glass, so that you can appreciate the appearance. The color of the beer is dark brown. If you hold it up to a light, you can see a reddish hue as well. The aroma is malty and earthy.
If you pour it properly, you will get a good, solid head of light brown foam that lasts and lasts. The foam leaves lace on the glass, as you consume the beer. Even the last few drinks of this beer will have some signs of foaminess.
This porter is brewed using only the 4 basic ingredients: barley, hops, yeast, and water. Sierra Nevada combines two- row barley malt, caramel malt, black patent malt, chocolate malt, and dextrin malt, along with nugget and willamette hops, to produce this delicious ale. The flavor is complex, with the taste of roasted malt, chocolate, and coffee, and even a little bit of smokiness. And, of course, no Sierra Nevada product would be complete without the taste of hops. The malty taste dominates, but you can definitely taste the hops. They provide a slightly bitter finish and a dry aftertaste. The alcohol level of this beer is 5.6 percent by volume and there are 192 calories per 12 oz. serving.
Food Compatibility:
With a rich, malty body like this, I would serve this beer with an equally rich, hearty food, like meat dishes, beef stew, barbecued foods, etc. And, because of the chocolate and coffee flavors, it would go well with certain dessert foods that have similar qualities, like coffee cake, bittersweet chocolate, or chocolate cream pie.
Final Thoughts:
Sierra Nevada produces many great products. This porter is one of its best, and it's one of my favorite porters of all. I admit that I am partial to porter, since it's one of my favorite styles of beer. But even if porter is not normally to your liking, I think you should try this beer. The combination of chocolate, malt, hops, coffee, and other complex flavors make for a delicious treat any time of year, and for any occasion.
