| Bryan_Carey's Full Review: Sierra Nevada Stout |
Sierra Nevada Brewery was one of the nations' first microbreweries. It was founded in 1981 by two homebrewers, Ken Grossman and Paul Camusi and it has been one of the most successful of all the early pioneers of craft brewing.
The stout that they produce is excellent. This stout has a dark brown color and a very roasted malt aroma. The flavor is rich, creamy, and delicious. The maltiness is very good, balanced by the taste of cascade hops. The finish is somewhat alcoholic, but still good. Even the aftertaste is pleasant, with that roasted flavor lingering on the palate.
When you first think of a great beer, what comes to mind? If you say Miller Lite or Coors light, then you probably will not enjoy Sierra Nevada Stout. This full- bodied beer will send the tastebuds of a rookie beer drinker into a state of shock. For this type of person, I recommend passing on Sierra Nevada products and trying something a little lighter for now, and then slowly building your way up.
Sierra Nevada Stout is also not a good choice for the calorie conscious consumer. A 12 oz. bottle contains a whopping 198 calories! For those who do not care about their waistlines, the calories are well spent. If you want a great beer, you have to put up with a few more calories. The alcohol level is also a little higher than most beers, weighing in at 5.8 percent by volume.
To match up with food, try a glass of Sierra Nevada Stout with your next ribeye steak, filet mignon, or any other beef dish. It would also complement a rich chocolate dessert, or a pie made with any variety of nuts.
As one of the early success stories of the microbrewery era, Sierra Nevada has provided the serious beer drinker with some great beer products. Sierra Nevada Stout is one of their best. It easily measures up to, and often surpasses, many of the best known European stouts. If you love great beer, especially darker beers and stouts, then you need to make sure that you try Sierra Nevada Stout. It's a winner in my book!
