honeybuff's Full Review: Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 EX DG Macro for Nikon
I bought this lens instead of a canon L lens due to the cost difference and decided to go for it after reading many good reviews. I cannot compare it to an L lens, as many reviews do.
What I like:
This is a great walk around lens (except its heavy)and takes nice photos. Its relatively fast to focus and takes really sharp pictures at f4 and up. Its great for basic landscape, some portrait work, and closeups. It does alright with action shots but takes excellent, sharp stills.
What I dislike:
In order to switch to manual focus you have to switch two things, instead of one easy click. The contrast is a little weak, so bump it up on the camera when using this lens. It can produce nice bokeh, but when compared to something like the canon 85 1/8, its not very good! Photos at f2.8 aren't sharp at all which is quite a bummer since many people buy this b/c of the f2.8 option. This is a rather heavy lens. It's not quite wide enough and not long enough, but I haven't seen any good zooms that give this kind of reach.
My advice:
If you prefer zoom lenses b/c its easier to use, this is a great lens. If you don't mind changing lenses, I recommend having a super wide angle lens like canon 10mm, something like a 50mm, and perhaps invest $ in one of the canon 70-200 or 100-400 zooms, in order to cover ranges w/the best glass.
