Pros: light weight. low price. very useful range
Cons: soft focus. constant 2.8 would be preferable
The Bottom Line: Great for beginners. Its reliable but eventually you'll want to trade up. Excellent value for price

| drfardook's Full Review: Sigma 28-105mm f/2.8-4.0 for Canon EOS |
I purchased this lens for my Canon 300D about six months ago as I was starting to move from performance photography where I only used a Canon 50mm 1.8 to street photography where a zoom lens that went pretty wide was necessary.
After reading a number of reviews I decided to purchase the lens due to its utility and low price. The construction feels a little brittle but I have never had a problem with the lens as I have a light touch. I can't commment on speed of the AF as I hate AF and never use it.
Its been a lot of fun to use for the past 6 months. I take it out nearly every day and its been very reliable and gives me a lot of way to attack a subject. The range on the camera is extremely useful.
I'm currently considering selling this and my Canon 75-300 4.5 as I never use the telephoto lens and many of the warnings I read in various reviews are becoming an increasing annoyance. I prefer to shoot with the lens wide open to get a short depth of field and while I haven't been aware of barrel distortion the focus is quite soft and very touchy if you're focusing yourself. Some shots just never seem to come out sharply. Another reviewer said at f5+ the sharpness issue is resolved which I would agree with. I'd put this more off to a touchy focus problem than a major flaw with the lens.
If you just picked up the Digital Rebel and want a lens to get started, this is great. Once you get rolling you're going to want to upgrade to a piece of higher quality glass though. But for the beginner and the budget conscious, its a top pick.
