Pros: size, weight
Cons: durability, focusing
The Bottom Line: After the lens broke down, just out of the warranty period I lost faith in Sigma Lenses. I had no choice but to purchase another one to recoup my losses.

I'm not a photography expert but I did purchase this lens to be used for my 2nd 35mm Canon Rebel. When I purchased the Canon Rebel (actually model is 500N) I only purchased the body and wanted a fairly inexpensive wide to zoom lens. I really wanted a 28 to 200 but since I already owned a Canon 70-300 I felt I didn't need it.
First thing that struck me was the clunky sounding auto focusing. I'm used to the silky smooth, extremely fast Canon AF lenses. So I was not used to the noisy gritty feel and sound of the Sigma. The first mistake when using the Sigma lens is when I was shooting indoors and I accidentally left the lens hood on when I used the flash which it produced a black shadow in and around my subject. (my fault) I didn't think the clarity was there comparing to the Canon lenses. Lighting was also a little off in my opinion. Some of the pictures where slightly over exposed or under compared to my Canon Elan. I also traded lenses on the Canon Rebel with my Elan so I had a chance to compare photo's of the same lighting and subject matter.
Here's my biggest problem. Last month when zooming in and out, I noticed the auto-focusing wasn't focusing. I went to take a close subject and then zoom out to snap a distant object and the lens would focus about 1/2 way and stop. This started only 1/2 the time and then got worse. After about 2 rolls the lens wasn't auto-focusing at all.
So I called Sigma and they told me to send it to them.
Sigma mailed me a service invoice and note saying they had to replace the auto-focusing motor which would cost me $50.00. Sigma has a 1 year warranty. This lens was just a few months out of warranty. I was not pleased.
So, really I wanted a 28-300 lens, so I called Sigma and asked if they can keep the lens and send me back a new 28-300. They agreed but charged me $260 for the new lens. I thought if i had to pay $50 and get a lens I wasn't thrilled with, why not just buy a new lens. So I did.
I'll let you know in another Epinion for that lens.
