Me too. (Reply to this comment)

I echo the above accolades. I didn't know this book existed, but friends of ours who work with the deaf community were helping their children sign before they could talk. It was amazing what those kids could communicate and how it helped their parents understand their children.

NOW I WANT THIS BOOK! (Reply to this comment)
by momof3calynlee
I use some infant signing with my youngest. Actually we are all learning to sign together, which is slow, but it is very helpful with the baby. I have a friend who is from a deaf family to help me along and we know about a dozen words so far, but now I want this book. Thanks!

Good Review... (Reply to this comment)
by lizf
I know of the book, but have not read it. My daughter is learning sign language because her Uncle and Aunt (my brother and SIL) are deaf. She is exposed to sign language on a regular basis and has been signing since 7 or 8 months old (I forget exactly.) The one down side to this... Elizabeth gets very furstrated when she is with a care taker (e.g., her paternal grandparents) that doesn't know sign language. She can't understand why they don't know what she wants. I feel bad for her, but I think it's a small price to pay to be able to communcate with most of the people in her world now and when she learns to speak better... she'll be able to communicate with everyone including the "handicapped" people like her grandparents.

I work with the deaf population, and this will be a great resource to use. Hearing children of deaf parents learn to sign much earlier that hearing children learn to talk. I will pass this book on to many

How Exciting (Reply to this comment)

I wish I could have another child so I could see this wonder of signing. It must be so rewarding to have real communication of the child's needs.

I had never heard of anything like this -- signing with infants before they can speak -- and I think it is one of the best ideas I've ever heard. Your review of the book was wonderful. My friends are getting ready to have their second baby (the 1st is just shy of a year) and I think I will by them this book. Also, the idea of actually saying the words as you sign them makes a lot of sense, and it will most likely strengthen their vocabulary, memory and learning skills.

Hi
I loved your review on sign language. My daughter is 19 months old now and has been using sign language since she was 7 moths old. The first one we taught her was Mamma. She is a very good talker and we truly believe that it has a lot to do with the sign language. By the time our daughter was 12 months old she had masterd 4-5 different signs. We used a regular ASL book. She is using several signs on a daily basis now among them are, Grandma,Grandpa,Daddy, please, cat, girl, pretty, eat, drink, ball, milk,
moose(cat's name)and cookie (her favorite one!) Yikes, I am bragging :-)can you tell I am a proud mommy?
Thanks Carola

Re: A Secret Sign (Reply to this comment)

the opportunity to perform is much different than a chance to perform...
humans need to be allowed avenues to grow, at an early age, as it accelerates and eases future learning. still, the mind expands as it is encouraged, not pushed...

A Secret Sign (Reply to this comment)
by cckjw
Interesting.... I'm somewhat reluctant to agree with this approach to teaching infants sign.
My fear is that we begin to stress our children at a young age already with pressures... This is one more way of contributing to the pressure to perform.
Babies have a sign language of their own as it is. Attentive parents learn to read that language.
Is this necessary? Probably not. I guess I can see good points and bad points to this
issue.
Anyway, I appreciate your review.

Re: Baby Signs (Reply to this comment)

Good question! Yes, it is the same as ASL. The signs that are recommended for infants are very easy to make. For example, the sign for "more" is to move both hands toward each other, fingers extended. Not much different than clapping. "Eat" involves putting the fingers up to ones mouth, also not too difficult for babies. Finally, "milk" involves just opening and closing your hand, mimicking the action of milking a cow. All of these signs are spontaneously used by infants.

Baby Signs (Reply to this comment)
by brim
Is the Baby Sign Language, as taught in this book, the same as American Sign Language (ASL)? I don't "speak" ASL, but I understand that making the signs with your hands requires a high degree of manual dexterity. So if infants are unable to produce verbal language because of a lack of fine motor control, then how are they able to sign with their hands?

I love bookstores. I bought this book for niece and she refers to it every day.
NOTE: I cannot read your MISCELLANEOUS EDITORIAL because that actegory on Epinions has been timed out all day today. I'm going to e-mail them as to why. I had to write my review under a book category.
just thought I'd let you know.
Thank you for your review on this book.

Wonderful review . . . (Reply to this comment)

I wish I'd had this book when my son was tiny. He was a very early talker, but it would have been so interesting to test out signing as a mode of communication.
BTW, noticed you are now an expert in K&F . . . congratulations! A well deserved honor.

My daughter learned that way (Reply to this comment)

As a person who trained people to work with developmentally delayed children, my daughter soon learned signing from me and a way to "talk" to the other children.

Great Epinion! (Reply to this comment)
by Barefooter
Thank you for writing that Epinion. It is an excellent one. I'm happy to see more and more parents using sign language to help their infants and toddlers communicate. I remember a study done a long while back where they discovered that at the age of ten months, infants who were taught sign language had an average vocabulary of 50 signs!
Hopefully, more parents will be willing to give their child this useful ability to communicate.

Well-written and well- thought out opinion! (Reply to this comment)
by hlcooper75
Thank you so much for the recommendation of this book! I agree! I am an elementary education major and have always found Piaget's theory on this matter to be ridiculous. I was an early talker, speaking in full sentences by my first birthday, and my 2 year old is the same. She, because of her size and her extensive vocabulary, is almost always taken for a 3 or 4 year old. We have started teaching her sign language, and it is amazing how quickly they pick it up. I had never thought of using it with my 8 month old. I'll be out looking for it this weekend!
