Cons: Cost ($$$). Time consuming initial setup. Manual is not comprehensive.
The Bottom Line: Life-saving product for many multifunction devices without built-in networking. Need advanced networking knowledge to set up. Once set up, it's easy to use and Tech support is awesome.
denverhiker's Full Review: Silex Technology SX-2000WG (SX-2000WG+) USB Device...
For those of you who find yourselves lost in the world of print servers and USB Servers, the SX2000 WG is a glorified print server that you to share USB devices such as printers and multifunction units through a wireless network or a LAN (wired). Until very recently, multifunction units with integrated network compatibility were really only available in commercial price ranges. These units are now coming down in price but are still very expensive. The SX2000 WG provides a way to integrate much less expensive non-network-integrated multifunction devices into a network. CAUTION: it does not work with all USB devices and not all multifunction devices. Check Silex's website for compatibility. Although the website doesn't mention Samsung, it is compatible with most Samsung multifunction devices.
On to the review. The SX2000 WG does its job amazingly well but is not for network novices. I tried to set it up on evening and ran in to a number of road blocks, got frustrated and put it aside. I decided to start from scratch a couple fo days later and over the course of about four hours, got it to work seamlessly with my laptop (wireless) and desktop (LAN).
I am not an IT expert, I know just enough to be dangerous. I essentially followed the manual on the CD-ROM included with the hardware, and with the help of a USB 2.0 flashdrive, was able to program the SX2000 WG to integrate into my wireless network. I went through a number of trial and error processes, but eventually managed to get all the wireless settings correct. The wireless settings are the largest deficiency in the setup manual, and I often had to go to outside websites to educate myself as to what terms meant or how to determine settings. There was one problem I could not solve myself (a firewall issue, as it turned out), but their tech-support-by-email was incredibly fast. I got responses within 5 minutes of my questions.
Once I got it installed, it has been a very easy product to use. It mostly sits in the background and does its job. I now have full networked functionality with my Samsung laser printer/fax/scanner/copier, something that I hitherto believed to be impossible. Thanks Silex, the SX2000 WG is a life saver!
Only complaints were the cost (~$120 compared to as low as $25 for some print servers) and lack of detail in the manual. Also, it seems that I cannot have two computers "connected" to the printer at once, so I have to "disconnect" one computer through the included software before I can connect the other computer and print. It is just a couple clicks of the mouse, but it would be inconvenient if my laptop and desktop were on opposite sides of the house.
