Pros: None at this point
Cons: Slightly expensive. Had no effect on my daughter's painful ear infection.
What it actually did was add pain pain to pocket since the money is forever spent.
Similasan Healthy Relief Ear Drops was a last ditch effort at four oclock in the morning to find relief for my nine-month old ear aches. Shes had chronic ear infections, since I cant remember when it started!
After a sleepless night of her fretting and crying and not being able to suck on her bink or sippy cup, I called Wal-Mart and asked if they had anything to relieve ear pain.
Even at four a.m. Wal-Mart employees are courteous and helpful. Sure enough the employee returned to the phone and happily replied that there was indeed something for pain relief.
First off - Similasan Healthy Relief Ear Drops is not an oral medication for infants. Although it is in the form of a liquid, you do not use this like you would infant Tylenol. It is strictly for the ear canal and nothing more. The package clearly states that so take the time to read both the box, and the insert.
Second - Similasan Healthy Relief Ear Drops is a homeopathic pain relief formula that is supposed to stimulate the bodies on mechanism for ear pain relief. It is not an actual inhibitor of pain. If I had known this, I would not have bought it. At $7.95 a bottle, I would not have trekked down to Wal-Mart (now @ 4:30 a.m.) to locate and purchase the drops. Especially since two days later, I phoned her doctor with news of no relief with her antibiotics, and he immediately phoned in a prescription for ear pain relief.
How Similasan Healthy Relief Ear Drops works is that you simply warm the bottle of fluid in your hands before administering it. You then put up to four drops in each ear (or the one ear that is hurting). You are to keep this up every four to six hours for 48 hours. If there is no relief, you are then instructed to contact your physician.
Further directions are as followed:
Directions for use: How to open tamper evident seal and cap: Remove tamper evident seal. Twist cap off bottle to remove.
Warm up the bottle in your hand.
Tilt head sideways. Squeeze plastic tip to drop solution into ear. Tip of applicator should not enter ear canal.
Use 3-5 drops per application, several times daily as needed.
Keep drops in ear by keeping head tilted or placing cotton in ear.
Use before expiration date. *(Similasan Earache Relief, SER, Feb. 2004)
The package does clearly state that the drops are intended to relieve pain associated with swimming, Influenza, drafts, and colds. Because my daughter has had runny noses that could be the culprit to her ear infections, I assumed (hoped) the drops would help. My ASSumption was WRONG.
But in all honesty, I can not say that Similasan Healthy Relief Ear Drops is a bad product. In actual fact, if I had swimmers ear, or an ear ache due to being outdoors on a freezing cold winter day, then I would not hesitate for a second to use the drops. The assumption was my mistake and I honestly belief that the product is a fabulous idea. I will keep it on hand, hoping to NOT have a reason to use it again, but keeping in nearby, just in case.
Active ingredients (homeopathic):

Bottle states that it is made in Switerzland.
Similasan comes only in a 10 ml / 0.33 fl oz bottle with medicine dropper attached. Attached dropper is slightly difficult to use when administering to an infant.
