Pros:Homeopathic ingredients, no side effects, offers some relief
Cons:Not for serious conjunctivitis, won't get all the red out
The Bottom Line: Relieves symptoms of minor conjunctivitis. Very soothing. Safe, with homeopathic ingredients
The last couple of months I seen to be experiencing recurrent mild conjunctivitis - pink eye - where my eyes become red and watery, grainy feeling, and irritated. Sometimes even waking up with some crusty gunk in my eyes. Yuck! Plus I look like I've been on an all-night bender or something. I had been using Visine, only occasionally, when this occurred, to get the red out so that I was presentable, if necessary. But the Visine wasn't good at relieving any other symptoms. (And this was definitely not an allergy type thing I was experiencing.) And, yes, I have thrown out a lot of eye makeup just to make sure it wasn't contaminated.

Fortunately, Similasan Pink Eye Relief Homeopathic Eye Drops have come to my rescue.
~ Product Description
From the packaging: Similasan's unique Active Response Formula stimulates the eye's natural ability to relieve the redness, watery discharge and burning associated with viral and environmental conjunctivitis, as well as sensation of grittiness and sensitivity to light. These eye drops have no known side effects or drug interactions - a huge plus in my book.
So what's in this, you ask? The active ingredients are:
Euphrasia 6X - for watery discharge
Hepar Sulphuris 12X - for inflammation
Belladonna 6X - for redness, burning
Inactive ingredients are:
Borate buffer, Sodium Nitrate, Silver Sulfate (as preservative), Purified Water.
The directions for use suggest, for adults and children age 2 and over
- Remove the tamper-evident seal from the next of the bottle
- Twist cap off bottle
- Squeeze plastic tip to release 2-3drops into the eye
- Apply as needed
You should NOT use this if you are experiencing a thick, white yellow or green discharge that forms a crust on the eye lid, or if the solution changes color or becomes cloudy. Do not use if you experience eye pain or changes in vision, or if you frequently contract infections that don't clear up easily. Basically, just remember this is intended to relieve only MINOR pink eye symptoms.
Similasan Pink Eye Relief comes in a .33 fl. oz. glass (I believe) bottle, tinted a very dark color so light won't deteriorate the formula. The cap is a bright pink. The bottle comes in a box with a pink eye at the top, and costs around $9.99, I believe is what I paid.
When you remove the twist-off cap, it reveals a dropper applicator that is attached to the bottle. The dropper does not come out, you just tip the bottle upside down.
~ My Experience
When I woke up with a mild case of conjunctivitis, red eyes, gritty feeling, irritation, watery eyes, the first thing I did was try out the Similasan Pink Eye Relief. First thing I noticed about applying this, the dropper applicator is not like a Visine bottle where you just tip it upside down and the drops come out. With the Similasan you need to squeeze the plastic dropper part to get the drops to come out. The dropper part is rather short, so you don't have a lot of room to get your fingers there to squeeze it, especially while it's so near your eyes. Kind of awkward, but I managed, and it got easier with a little practice.
The drops did not sting in any way, and most definitely soothed my irritated eyes immediately. The grainy feeling abated as well. The redness - well, it was relieved a little bit, but I think Visine got more red out than the Similasan. I continued to apply the Similasan several times that day, and by the end of the day my eyes looked and felt much better. Definitely way more soothing than Visine - a much better remedy all in all. The teariness was also reduced. I will be keeping this around the house for sure!
~ Final Thoughts
Similasan Pink Eye Relief really does provide relief from minor conjunctivitis symptoms. I noticed immediate soothing relief from that gritty feeling and irritation, as well as runniness. There was some reduction of the redness too. This is a completely safe remedy, with no side effects. If you are prone to mild conjunctivitis, you should have some on hand for the next time. Remember though, this is not appropriate for a serious case with a heavy discharge.
