Cannot imagine WHAT we were thinking of. We went out and bought a new mattress without first checking Epinions. Won't make THAT mistake again.
Our (uninformed) opinion was that since Simmons is a mattress brand that has been around a while, one could depond upon their quality.
At their local factory store, "Simmons Mattress Gallery", we selected a middle-range priced model that seemed, with our momentary testing in the store, to be comfortable.
It is not. The mattress is now only 8 months old, and in spite of our following their care recommendations to the letter (they say to rotate it every 2 weeks --- isn't THAT ridiculous, particularly since they don't provide handles on the mattress, like every cheaper mattress I've ever seen does have.) it has two long depressions under where my wife and I sleep, and a high hump in the middle. It is far worse than the inexpensive, 15-year old Sears mattress that we replaced. We awake each morning in real pain --- hips, shoulders, back --- that we never experienced on the old mattress.
We went to the store to talk to them about it. We would need to fill out a form, but they didn't have any. Come back tomorrow. The next day they hauled out this multi-page "service request" form that we had to take home and fill out --- complete with draweings of the problems with dimensions, etc. The form obviously was designed to discourage complaint. I imagine that many people would give up trying to complete it. Then a third trip to the store to hand it in. At the store there was a fifteen minute wait while the clerk filled out yet another form. Finally they announced that an "independant" company, Mattress Pros, would call and make an appointment to inspect the mattress.
The "independant" company did send out a pleasant enough young man who did not give the impression of knowing anything about mattresses. He spent about 3 minutes fussing over the mattress, took a few measurements, and left, saying we would hear from Simmons after they received his report.
About a week later we received what certainly is a form letter from Mattress Pros --- not Simmons. The letter said, "Although Mattress Pros is an impartial third party to your complaint [oh, sure, I believe that one] we are bound by the standards and tolerances set by Simmons for determining defects in the field..... it has been determined that your mattress and box spring have no manufacturing defects. Body impressions are a normal characteristic of premium bedding....." That's news to me --- and also the Simmons salesman even said that this was not normal.
I went and had a talk with the salesman at the store. He seemed to be genuinely disgusted with Simmons, and gave me the corporate address, suggesting we write to them, but made me promise I wouldn't tell them who gave me the address! Obviously they have put as many roadblocks as they could invent between the consumer and the company.
I have since talked with a few other mattress salesmen (who sell Simmons as well as other brands) and each one told me that Simmons is terrible about quality control, and terrible with customer service.
There isn't much point in communicating further with Simmons. I am told I would NEVER get our money back. And I would not want a new Simmons mattress to replace this one, even if they offered. It would certainly be just more of the same poor quality and hassles.
Nothing to do but go out and buy a new NON-SIMMONS mattress, and throw this one away.
