Pros: Extra edge support, no squeaky springs or coils
Cons: Middle of mattress began to sink after about a year
The Bottom Line: Pocketed coil construction makes for a quiet sleep and doesn't transfer movement. Solid edge support is a great feature. We experienced some sagging in the middle, however.

| amyk49's Full Review: Simmons Beautyrest Mattress |
About 4 years ago my husband and I decided our old mattress had become intolerable. There was a crater in the middle which caused us to roll together. I almost needed a winch to get me out of bed in the morning, trying to climb out of that sunken hole!
We were on a budget, so we shopped around. At that time Simmons Beautyrest Mattresses were being advertised as The Bowling Ball Mattress with a TV commercial showing a man lying undisturbed on the mattress while a bowling ball was tossed onto the other side. The Simmons Beautyrest catch phrase was, and still is I believe, The Do-Not-Disturb Mattress.
Our local furniture store was having a Simmons Mattress sale, so after bouncing around on a few different models we finally chose the Pacifica 1000 Firm, in Queen size. This model was one of the mid-quality choices available. Simmons Beautyrest mattresses are available in different collections, with varying levels of support and plushness.
~ One Important Note
We did NOT purchase the box spring to go along with the mattress. As I mentioned, our budget was very tight, and our box spring was in good condition, so we decided to just get the mattress. Our box spring was solid and not sunken in the middle. However, some of our problems with the Simmons (described later in this review) may stem from not having bought the mattress as a set with the box spring.
~ Simmons Beautyrest Features
The Simmons hype is their patented Pocketed Coil innerspring construction. Each coil is individually pocketed, which creates:
- Less movement, as each coil reacts independently
- Virtually squeakless peace and quiet
- Better body contouring
Part of the allure for my husband and me was that this independent coil construction was supposed to eliminate the "roll together" we'd been experiencing with our old mattress.
The Pacifica 1000 model also had extra edge support, provided by heavy duty border rods. We'd been having trouble with our old mattress collapsing on the edges when we sat them to put on shoes, etc. So this sounded like a great feature.
The mattress coils are made with high-tensile upholstery wire, and, according to Simmons, provide up to 75% more support than ordinary coils.
Our Queen size mattress features four positioning handles, two on each side. The Pacifica model is not a pillowtop model, but has a cushy, pretty covering, that is quiet plush.
The Pacifica 1000 Queen is about 9 inches thick, and all Queen sized sheets I've used have fit nicely.
Our sales person suggested we rotate the mattress, especially in the first three months.
~ Our Experience with the Simmons Beautyrest Mattress
Ahhh, what a great night's sleep! No more falling into a hole in the middle. The mattress was firm, but cushiony. It felt solid all the way to the edge. The edge support was excellent, and remains so today, 4 years or so later.
When my husband turned over, I was aware of it, but the mattress didn't transfer the movement very much. I don't know about the bowling ball demonstration, though. While we never tested it, I think that's a stretch.
The quietness of the mattress was exceptional. The pocketed coil construction makes a huge difference there. I've never slept on such a quiet mattress. No squeaky coils or springs. (Now if I could just get the bed frame to stop squeaking!) And 4 years later, the Simmons Beautyrest is still just as quiet as the day we bought it.
Unfortunately, within only one year, a valley began to appear in the middle of the mattress. We flipped it, rotated it, but the middle was definitely sagging a little bit nevertheless. So we once again had that "roll together" thing happening, but thankfully it wasn't quite as bad as our old mattress.
The store where we bought the Simmons suggested that it's the fault of our old box spring. Although I cannot see any sagging or problems with the box spring, there might be something to it - I don't know. But my suggestion is, buy the mattress as a complete set along with the box spring.
~ Final Thoughts
While the Simmons Beautyrest doesn't quite live up to the bowling ball hype, it's a pretty good mattress. The Contour-Flex independent-action pocket coils transfer little movement, and create a very quiet, peaceful sleep experience. Since we didn't buy the mattress as a set along with the box spring, I don't feel confident labeling the mattress "defective" or not living up to its hype because it's now sagging in the middle. I've learned my lesson there, but my next mattress SET will most likely be something different, just because I don't want to take a chance that the sagging is an inherent problem with the Simmons. And it is for this reason that I cannot recommend the Simmons Beautyrest at this time.
UPDATE
We have finally gotten rid of the Simmons Beautyrest, and are now enjoying sleep Nirvana. Take a look at my review of our Isotonic Memory Foam Mattress Sleep System if you're interested in something other than a traditional mattress set. We really love it!
