| ch59's Full Review: Simmons Beautyrest Mattress |
Several years ago my husband and I decided to invest in a quality mattress set. Our search led us to the Simmon's beautyrest mattress. We were especially interested in the individual pocketed coils. This allowed one sleeper to toss or roll while the other was not affected.
We went into the showroom and sure enough, my husband could roll and turn over on the bed, and I would not "sink to the middle" or be bounced around. The edges also had added support so in theory there is more sleeping space compared to other innerspring mattresses. We also fell in love with the thick, soft pillowtop that seemed to engulf us like a cloud. Too bad we didn't know that "cloud" definitely had some trouble brewing for us.
We looked at the sample crosscut section of the bed. It looked to be of good quality. Lots of foam and padding and the individual pocked coils did seem to move independently of each other. The outer cover was a silky jacquard material that looked very attractive even without any sheets on the bed.
We did try and do some comparison shopping, but it was difficult - different stores carry the same beds, but they change the names. So at one store, the Beautyrest 1000 may be called The Beautyrest 5000 etc. The only way to compare the same bed was to get a salesmen to give you the 'specs' and coil count of the bed. With some salesmen, they acted as if they were letting you in on some major trade secret - others were very reluctant to even give the information. This was true of most bedding manufacturers. They don't want you to leave the store to go comparison shopping.
For us, we felt the Simmon's Beautyrest was the most comfortable - and caused the least disruption when one of us tossed or turned. So we plunked down the $1500+ for a top of the line Beautyrest mattress and boxspring. We couldn't wait for the wonderful nights sleep ahead.
To be fair to Simmon's, we DID sleep pretty well for a few months before problems began. Within 6 months is when we noticed body impressions and dips in the mattress. When I contacted the store we bought the bed from, they insisted this was caused by us "not flipping the bed". This was infuriating as we flipped that bed every single month like clockwork. We even flipped it in the manner they suggested: turn the mattress a half turn, THEN flip it. This was to ensure the mattress would wear evenly. Martha Stewart would have been proud! But how does one PROVE they flipped the bed? This is where they get you.
I thought well heck, I've got a 20 year warranty on the bed, they HAVE to replace it: WRONG! The salesman pointed out that "body impressions" are NOT covered by the warranty. So basically, once your pillowtop starts to break down - that's it. It's not covered by warranty. And as we found, the pillowtop IS the bed. Without that soft cushioning - you're at the mercy of the springs.
We went around and around with Simmon's. They would not budge. They stated if they had to replace a bed everytime the pillowtop starts to show impressions, they'd be out of business. Hmmmmm, wish I knew this in the beginning! If we had researched a bit harder - we would have found that the foam used in our pillowtop WILL break down rather quickly. That is just the nature of synthetic foam.
So after 2 years, and $1500 down the drain we realized our mistake and our lesson was learned. We got rid of the bed, and bought a latex mattress. Best decision we ever made. Ironically enough, during the 2 years we slept on the Simmon's - my husband had THE worst back problems ever. Back problems are virtually gone since we got rid of the Simmon's Beautyrest.
I think Simmon's would have a quality product if they spent more time and money in making their pillowtops last longer. They should also warrant the pillowtop as it IS an integral part of the mattress. They may have made changes to the Beautyrest since we bought ours years ago. Just be sure to read the warranty FIRST. If it doesn't cover the pillowtop or "body impressions" buyer beware. You may end up having to live with the problem or buy a new bed a lot sooner than you thought.
