| Mrsfitts's Full Review: Simmons Beautyrest Mattress |
I have the wrong kind of bed for my guest room. The Simmons Beautyrest World Class® Premium 5000 is a very firm Queen-size pillow-top mattress.
My biggest problem with this bed is, I have relatives fighting over who will get the guest bed when I go to a place that no longer requires beds. I never thought a bed was something relatives fought over until I found my own Heaven on Earth with my own Simmons Beautyrest World Class® "Heritage Washington Luxury" king size mattress that I now sleep on.
We originally bought the bedroom set when my daughter was away at college. She moved out, taking with her, the usual 3 rooms of furniture, leaving us with just our bedroom set and the living room furniture. (The kitchen appliances we got custody of too)
During the holidays that my daughter would visit, she would ask if she could take the bed back with her. "No" was always the same answer. When she stayed with us after graduating college until she could get enough money for an apartment (at that time, one-bedroom apartments were only $1,200/mo. in the SF Bay area). She got rid of her childhood bed before she moved back in with us, and she asked if she could have this bed when she moved out. Again "no" was the answer. Fortunately one of my sisters came up with a bed she could have!
The scariest incidence resulting from the purchase of this bed came after last Labor Day weekend. I was hosting a family reunion. I had relatives coming in from 2 states to attend. Of course I put my mother up at my house. Mom's been having lots of medical problems lately, and these have resulted in her not getting any kind of sleep at home. The first night over my house she told us good night, but that she would probably be up for hours because of her sleeping problems.
The next morning she told me that there must be a sleep spell on that mattress, because she no sooner got into bed, than she was out for the whole night! Something like this hasn't happened since she first got sciatica. Either falling right asleep or staying asleep! She stayed Thursday through Sunday. The day after we took her to the airport, she calls from her home and tells us that she's canceled the purchase of her new home! It turns out that it was because there was something wrong with the place, not because she decided to move in with us!
We've had lots of occasions when we've had to use the guest bed. When this guest bed first arrived, we got out our bowling balls & tested the commercials we'd seen! Besides dropping bowling balls on each other, we got to use this bed when we painted, installed new windows, bought my new bed (you have to tear down your bed and have it ready for hauling away when your new one arrives) and when I tore my knee at work and couldn't climb stairs. My husband loves the firmness of this mattress. All of our guests do. I do not. Firm mattresses hurt my tender points. I do not get a backache from this mattress. I just require more softness for my hips, shoulders and knees not to hurt from the pressure of laying on them. I am in the minority though, of people not absolutely finding the best night's sleep. Once I get to sleep, I do sleep through the whole night. I knew that this was close, but not quite it when it came time to pick my own mattress.
*The queen-size Simmons Beautyrest World Class® Premium 5000 has a double pillow-top.
*This mattress set also comes with an exclusive Powerflex™ Torsion Bar Foundation. This is also found on the Simmons Back Care line of mattress sets. The torsion bars cushion the upper back, hips and lower legs with formed steel to support the lumbar and thigh regions
Unlike my bedroom's mattress, this guest room mattress has very firm support on all of it's edges. This makes the bed very handy for sitting on to put on your shoes & socks. On my softer mattress, you could find yourself on the floor if you lean over too much!
Choosing The Perfect Bed
When choosing your own bed, make sure you take along each person that will be sleeping in the bed. Dogs and cats are usually not allowed. (except maybe for Pogo) Wear comfortable clothes and slip-off shoes. Prepare to do almost everything you would normally do in a bed except 'fool around' and eat crackers.
Prepare to do some in-depth investigating. Read all of the illustrated demonstration signs, placards and notices. This will give you some insight as to what different terms mean. Also the pictures often will have cut-aways of the materials used in the construction of a particular brand. I am allergic to wool. During the last decade, wool was a popular material to make mattresses with. Reading the information displays, I could see which mattresses were made of the finest synthetic materials (what I need) and which were constructed with natural materials (Ahhh-Choo!)
Final Analysis
The only other problem with this 13" mattress is the weight. If you are single, this bed is one tough mattress to rotate or flip. On this particular mattress we have not ever seen a need to flip or rotate it. We do it mostly out of years of habit. Even though we've had it longer than our softer Simmons mattress, there has never been any depressions noticed in it. I'm not sure if it's the firmness or if because it's never had the same people in it for more than 6 months at a time. Simmons mattresses are made with the Better Sleep Non-Flip Design™.
Most people have jewelry or art that their heirs would covet. With us it's our Simmons Beautyrest World Class® Premium 5000 that my relatives are fighting over.
