sweetycaroline's Full Review: Jinny Johnson - Simon & Schuster Children's Guide ...
This book rocks!
How many people wish they could get their children interested in something other than t.v. , video games , or chat rooms? This book can do that.
This book is good for ages 2 through twelve. I would think over the age of twelve might need more of an adult book. The reason I say this book is good for young children is I bought this book for my son when he was a little over a year old.
As with most children mine was fascinated with bugs from a very early age. I got this book so he could look at the pictures. He is four years old now and still carries this book faithfully. My daughter is barely over a year old and she shows interest in this book.
This book is as much educational as it is entertaining. A few days ago we were all outside playing and he started hollering for my attention. He had a found a giant brilliantly colored caterpillar. This caterpillar had a horn on it's abdomen making it even more unique. Later that evening he brought me this book asking me to read it. He had found this caterpillar in the book and wanted to know more!
The illustration in this book is fantastic. Many of the pictures are actual photographs , while the drawings at first glance might be mistaken for a photograph.
The lettering in this book is an easy size to read for children. The book itself is wrote in a way that provides enough information to stimulate their interest without boring them with too many scientific details.
The book has 80 pages and is thin and easy for a child to handle. This book contains information on insects you might see every day and those that are more unusual yet interesting.
There are eight main chapters in this book consisting of information on :
There are at least three sub categories in each chapter with a focus on a certain insect pertaining to that group. Also in the contents is a foreword , what are insects and spiders ? , glossary , and index and acknowledgments .
Many of the insects in this book are shown through each life phase leaving no room for mistaken identities. Each insect can be found by it's common name . Then after some brief interesting information you are supplied with the family name , size of the insect , and number of species. The book does contain enough detail to come in handy on school reports.
Twelve people actually worked on this book to give it the supreme quality that it holds. One of these twelve was Dr. Bryan Turner . The book is copyrighted in 1996.
Overall this is a fascinating book that has even come in handy for me . I can find no reason why any child would dislike it . I feel it makes a perfect educational gift .
