dreamyone's Full Review: SimpleTech (SP-U35/500) 500GB 500 GB USB 2.0 Hard ...
I save a lot of documents both on a professional and personal level. Plus, we take a lot of pictures and videos. I like to keep copies in at least two places of all the pictures and videos, plus copies of many of the documents, some of which are quite long. Even though my computers have sufficent hard drive space, I'm a strong believer in the external hard drives, and have various brands at home and in my office. The Simple Tech one discussed in this report was a gift. I would not have chosen it because it is slightly bigger than others of the same capacity, and because it requires both connection to the computer by a USB cable, and connection to a power source though a bulky electrical cord and plug, which means this is not something I'd travel with. However, I have no complaints with this model. It does exactly what it should do and the color is a pretty blue. (It may as well be pretty since it's sitting on my desk - some other brands are fairly unattractive).
It's relatively fast and easy to use. It sets up easy, and has a one click backup, so you don't have to do much to get everything copied. It also has a capacity meter to let you know when it's filling up. The company provides a free 2 GB account on myfabrik.com, although I haven't used it.
The neat thing about the capacity meter is that the meter itself is the light on the unit. It shows how much disk space is in use.
The unit allows you to schedule backups which is recommended by most computer manufacturers. You can schedule them for daily, weekly, or monthly. Plus, you can push a button on the unit for an immediate backup whenever you want. You can set it up to copy all files or only the things you want copied. Additionally, the company claims that there's free unlimited technical support for one year. (We haven't needed any).
Although I would not have chosen this item if I had been making the purchase mainly because it requires an electrical power source in addition to the USB connection to the computer and because it's slightly bigger than the similar models, I have been surprisingly happy with it and would recommend it. I have had no problems with it, and that's the mark of a good product.
