panaceatoo's Full Review: Simple Green Stone Cleaner, Unscented, 32 oz
I recently moved into a new house that had granite countertops. I've never had them before and I'd read conflicting information about how to clean them (i.e. granite's indestructible so use what you want, don't use lemon-based cleaners because they can etch, don't use soap because it leaves a film, etc.). Well, I proved the last one by trying to wipe down the counters with good ol' soap and water. My all-natural dish detergent left an icky film all over the counters. It didn't cause damage, but it sure as heck didn't look good.
So off to the Home Depot I went in search of a granite cleaner. I wanted something fairly easy to use (i.e. spray & wipe) and that wasn't too chemically, since I'd be using on a surface that food may touch. I found a lot of options, but many of them said you had to wash the cleaner off with water if using around food. Call me lazy if you want, but I didn't want to deal with that extra step (or the potential of leaving water marks all over the counter).
Then I spyed the Simple Green Stone Cleaner. I've used other Simple Green products in the past with great success—and I love the fact that their products are non-toxic and biodegradable. The Stone Cleaner says that it keeps "surfaces such as marble, granite, quartz, limestone, Corian®, Silestone®, ceramic, porcelain, engineered stone, and more, protected from spills and daily wear-and-tear, sparkling clean and looking like new." It also claimed to resist fingerprints and smudging. And it didn't require any extra steps beyond spray & wipe. At only $4.99 for a 16 oz. bottle, I was sold!
So how's it work? I followed the directions to simply spray on and wipe off with a clean, soft towel or paper towel. (You can also let the spray sit on for a minute or two for tougher cleaning jobs.) I tried it out first on a small spot off the counter that had the icky soap residue from my first cleaning attempt and voila! Icky soap residue gone - shiny granite countertop sparkling through!
I proceeded to clean the rest of the countertops with the Simple Green Granite Cleaner, taking off all of the smudges and soapy residue I'd gotten on them. It even took off greasy/oily smudges around the stove on the first try - no need to let the cleaner sit. And true to the bottle's claims, the countertops resisted smudging pretty well for a couple of days. (By then it was time to clean again anyway.)
Overall, I'm very happy with the Simple Green Stone Cleaner. I'm so impressed with the results that I plan to try the Stone Polish on my next trip to the HD.
