| bartolomeo321's Full Review: Simplicity Rear Tine 516 Garden Tiller |
I've had one of these for six years and have used it for a home garden and some light commercial use.
The 516 is a lighter weight rear-tine tiller. It is easier to use than any front-tine tiller I have tried, and compares well with the larger Troy-Built "horse" model which was the standard for many years. Compared to the "horse," it is much lighter and easier to control, and narrower, but otherwise similar.
This tiller is not heavy enough to till down sod, or heavy crop residue, like cornstalks. It does well tilling established gardens where the crop has been removed or chopped up with a mower. Because of its small size, it fits well between rows for controlling weeds after the crop has emerged.
I find that the controls are simple and easy to use. There is a "deadman" control that stops everything when you let go, and a separate reverse lever. The depth control uses a simple but reliable lynch pin, which is a little fiddly to set but will not slip. Tires provide sufficient traction.
The tiller has been reliable. One of the control cables broke but was easily replaced.
