THE DVD BOX
There is more than one DVD available to buy. I bought the one which is widescreen version and also comes with a white t-shirt for a total of $20 pre-tax. The T-shirt shows what is believed to be Homer's hand reaching upward toward a donut which is supposed to be the letter "O" in the word "Movie". Size is "XL" and there is a "Fruit of the Loom" label on back of neck collar which states "Made in El Salvador of USA fabric". Nothing is printed on the back of the t-shirt and it's made with 100% cotton.
The DVD is encased in the typical hard plastic used by pretty much all dvds. It also has a light cardboard covering which slides over the dvd casing. The covering and dvd case appear exactly the same on front and back. The only difference is the sticker placed on front of the covering which is a quote by Gene Shalit stating "You'll Laugh Till Your Knees Hurt and You Can't Breathe!".
The inside of the DVD casing has a very thin 4 page foldout with writing on both sides.
This foldout contains:
A) Coupons for Simpsons Season Discs 1-10.
B) An Offer for a free Simpsons Wallpaper for your cellphone
C) An ad for the newest Simpson's Movie Video Game
D) An article by Homer Simpson
E) An Ad for the Simpsons Shop including a 10% off coupon.
F) An article titled "Springfield Celebrates it's Angriest Mob Ever!"
G) An ad for the new Simpsons Ride coming in 2008 to Universal Theme Parks.
The DVD contains, per box:
1) The Movie (of course)
2) Commentary
3) Directors Commentary
4) Deleted Scenes and slightly alternate ending
5) Special Stuff
6) A lot of trailers
NOTE TO READER
Before I dive into the movie, I want to write a few sentences about this movie as a whole. I consider it to be very comedic in nature and thought provoking at the same time.
I will not entirely spoil this movie for you if you have not seen it yet. However, I will provide outlines of multiple scenes. If you have already seen this movie, you can rehash parts of it by reading my review. If you have not seen this movie, don't be fearful of reading my review.
THE BEGINNING Keep in mind I will not specifically say what happens, just trying to peak your interest on what to look out for, or help you rehash.
Fox broadcasts The Simpsons TV Show and also has there 10 second intro with music and background at the beginning of this movie. There is a funny twist added to this intro by one of the Simpsons Characters.
THE PLOT - CAREFULLY WORDED TO NOT SPOIL
There are two major plots in my opinion, and multiple subplots.
Plot 1:
Involves Grandpa Simpson at church forewarning fellow church members (including all of the Simpsons) of impending doom through a cryptic message.
The cryptic message is attributed to a "temporary senior moment" by Homer. Marge's persistence that it must have a meaning keeps you pondering what Grandpa was trying to say.
This plot is important and has deep meaning to the movie in general. You will not be left hanging for a long time waiting to find out the full answer to this plot.
Which leads us to....
Plot 2:
The major storyline behind this movie. Again, I will delicately word this for someone who does not want specific detail but is curious.
The major plot involves a dire situation for the entire town of Springfield which is self imposed by the town's lackadaisical attitude towards the environment. Town members try to and successfully make necessary change to fix their environmental problem, and just when things are looking up, along comes one Homer Simpson to wreck everything drastically.
Homer does not just wreck all progress made towards the environmental problem, he makes the problem worse then it ever was. In fact he makes it so bad, that the US Government gets involved.
This leads to the government (E.P.A. Division in connection with the president) to create and impose a solution.
This so-called solution puts the entire town of Springfield in a chaotic state.
SCENES TO LOOK OUT FOR WHILE WATCHING
The following are in no particular order.
---Look out for #1
Does Marge actually use a curse word? No it's not the "F" word, No it's not the "S" word. Let's just say it's definitely a curse word the way she says it, and it's directed towards her soul mate!
---Look out for #2
Is there nudity in this movie?
Very brief nudity. Yet the scene leading up to the nudity is edge of your seat stuff. It all stems from a challenge between Homer and Bart. I won't tell you which one shows nudity if you have not seen it yet. But one of them definitely does!
---Look out for #3
Homer and Marge have a major relationship problem. This problem leads you to believe that a split may be forthcoming. Marge's heart to heart talk to Homer (via VCR Tape) is touching and well spoken, also saddening. I can't emphasize how well she relays her past and current feelings.
---Look out for #4
We have all heard or used many of the common idioms around such as:
"A penny saved is a penny earned"
"Don't put all your eggs in one basket"
"Bark is worse then their bite"
and on and on
Well "The Simpson's Movie" takes a common idiom like "Stuck between a rock and a hard place" and not only literally fits this idiom into the storyline, but provides you with a well setup visualization which rolls nicely with the story in general.
---Look out for #5
This movie connects greatly with a common "what if scenario" some people may have or may have even discussed with friends for fun.
What if the electric and lights went out while you were in a store? Well this situation is addressed and Moe finds out first hand.
---Look out for #6
Bart goes through a struggling relationship with Homer as a father. He ponders what it's like to have a caring nurturing father and this leads him to... GASP.. GASP.. observe Flanders in a whole new light. Could Bart possibly spend some fatherly moments with Flanders? Could Bart actually truly enjoy those moments? Watch the movie!
---Look out for #7
Do you want to picture Marge and Homer making love?
I don't!!
But, what if it's artistically done in a funny way which relives old Disney characters/animation.
Yes, it's very much worth watching and tastefully done.
---Look out for #8
Homer is setup to be the Hero and is trying to fulfill that role, but he may need some help from a little daughter of his if he wants to live at the ending. Can little Maggie be a hero also? Watch the movie and find out!
---Look out for #9
The environmental theme should be well received by anyone watching this movie. Combine that theme with a stunning character development by Homer and you have a valuable lesson. This lesson comes through as an epiphany which Homer is forced to live. The script and imagery of this epiphany is very intellectually brought to the screen. All of it done in true Simpsons style which makes it thought provoking and humorous!
---Look out for #10
Everyone knows that Homer is a master at making dumb decisions and saying some dumb stuff. This movie brings forth new ways of showing just how dumb Homer can be in more ways then one. In one scene, Homer makes a fake stop sign which clearly shows his stupidity. This leads to a few lines of funny dialogue by the victims who run into the fake stop sign created by Homer.
ODE TO THE COMEDIC GENIUS OF THE SIMPSONS
The absolute best compliment I can pay to a comedic show or movie is:
---I laughed hard multiple times and I didn't see the punchline before it was delivered!---
You know what I mean, like when a sitcom has one of it's characters utter something dumb like "I never eat cake on my birthday!" then that same character is presented with a cake and immediately digs in while a laugh track plays in the background. That type of humor makes me want to puke! The Simpsons Movie does not do that to you.
VISUALIZATIONS
Animation is excellent from start to finish of the movie. There are a few scenes which start out as wide shots then zoom in while creating a beautiful realistic 3d effect. One in particular I recommend you watch out for is the mob scene where many Springfield towns people are marching with lit torches.
CREDITS
Please watch all of the credits. You will find a few small scenes added just for fun. The very last scene located in the credits shows Maggie uttering her first word. It's a doozy and I absolutely hope what she says is the full blown truth! Watch and you will see what I mean!
