Pros: If you are a beginner and sew doll clothes this would be a start.
Cons: Cheap plastic, the heaviest needle jams in a pair of blue jeans.
After 34 years my Western Auto Wizard Citation sewing machine could not keep a tight stitch without a few knots in the hem. For Christmas, I asked for a new sewing machine. I looked in Wal-Mart and was impressed with the looks of the Singer 1120 Sewing Machine for $89.98. I put that on my Christmas list.
My obliging hubby put it under the tree. Well I unwrapped this little attractive-looking machine and oohed and ahhed at how far they had come in 34 years in updating sewing machines. That is until I tried to thread the needle and then tried to hem a pair of blue jeans.
Cons: The Singer 1120 Sewing Machine booklet is vague with description and illustrations on how to even thread this machine let alone on how to unjam it. I never did figure out how to use the self-threader.
The spooler to put the thread on the is cheap and flimsy and I could see it breaking with much use.
It's twice as noisy as my old one. Reminds me of car muffler with a hole in it.
It would not fit in my old cabinet (too small).
Not being stationary, the machine moves easily along the surface if you push against it while working on material.
Do not, I repeat do not try to hem blue jeans. I even changed the needle for the recommended fabric and the it jammed and got stuck in the material and the machine. After much rocking, I was finally able to free the needle from the denim without damaging either the material or the machine. I promptly packed it in its box and took it back to the store.
Pros: The Singer 1120 Sewing Machine does have 23 built-in stitches.
It has an easy carry handle attached to it and is lightweight (probably about 15 lbs).
The front-loading bobbin is a nice feature, full access.
The reverse on this machine is a lever on the lower right front which you push down.
Bottom Line: This is not for blue jeans or drapes or any heavy material. I was so frustrated with the simple hemming of blue jeans, I did not try any other stitches, so I cannot relate on how those work.
So I will be scouring Epinions looking for a suitable sewing machine replacement. I don't need a top-of-the line model, just something to hem jeans.
