| sewingfreak's Full Review: Singer 2517 Mechanical Sewing Machine |
I first bought this machine, eager to master sewing while being apprehensive at the same time. I got it at Target for 85 dollars. After taking classes at Joann, I found sewing enjoyable and discovered it was something I was likely to pursue more seriously.
The machine does live up to the basic requirements of a home sewing machine, but you will need to buy an additional presser foot for zipper installation. It only comes with a general purpose presser foot.
There is also an irony in buying this machine. As a novice, you tend to buy the lowest-end machine due to price consideration and thinking you won't need that extra 45 stitch capability. But with this machine, I had tension problems, the manual was difficult to understand and the buttonhole is a four-step process. Everything to discourage the beginning sewer! I literally had to do 100 buttonholes to perfect the process.
Invest in a higher-end machine with automatic threading and 1 step buttonhole and you will really get the bang for the buck...and encouragement to cultivate sewing as a hobby!
