As of late there have been some incredible paper crafting products making the rounds at trade shows. I was lucky enough to get hooked up with Sizzix and while I had a rough start, using the various machines in the series has become extremely easy. This is sort of a mix between the old school single layer punches and a Cricut machine. The Cricut is a great item but I feel more comfortable with the Sizzix. In order to use a Sizzix you need several things; die cutters [like cookie cutters for paper], card stock [or comparable paper] and a flat surface. This isn’t something that I would let kids use because there are glass plates that the cutters go into and while they are strong, they are glass.
The Night & Day alphabet comes with upper and lower case letter along with numbers and punctuation marks. You also get some shapes like a moon, stars, cloud and sunburst. Depending on the size of the shape there could be one or two per die. The die gets placed on the Sizzix stack and rolled through the machine. When you remove the layers you have perfectly cut pieces of paper that you can use to make a plethora of things. Making the Sizzix stack isn’t hard and there is a step by step instruction sheet with every set sold. The alphabet packs cost roughly a hundred dollars so make sure it is a font that you will get a lot of use from.
One of the nice things about the alphabet kits is that they come packaged in a thick plastic case. You can buy something else to store them but I can't see anyone breaking the case under normal use. In regards to the Night & Day font, it is something that is fun but doesn’t have an overly distorted look to it. You can use the letters to personalize picture mats, greeting cards, invitations, table settings and more. You can use different colored card stock for an even more dramatic or colorful look. Some people are selling mini kits of the cut outs for a few dollars, that is a lot easier on the wallet than springing for the set. You can buy five or six sets of the alphabet cut outs and use them for your projects. Owning the set, however, lets you make a wide variety of cut outs and if you start using textured or specialty paper, the combinations are endless.
The Night & Day alphabet set can be used with the BIGkick, Big Shot and Sidekick. You can get the most from the larger machines because you will be able to run the dies through quicker and get more items processed at one time. The upside to the Sidekick [including the Hello Kitty one] is that it is portable and can be used almost anywhere. The type of machine that you are using doesn't really matter; it is all relevant to convenience and personal preference.
If you are going to make these and sell them there are a couple of different ways you can go about it. Make basic color packages with extra common letters. It would be almost impossible to offer someone three of one color and five of another so offering an assortment is a lot easier on you. You can sell the packets for a couple of dollars plus postage or sell them locally. Another option is something that I have had a lot of luck with. Crafting groups. Instead of buying a lot of sets you invest in one and then swap with other people. You set a value price on something and then you can trade of equally priced items. If I had five complete alphabets plus some extras of common letters I would put a four dollar value on it. Someone with another font would do the same, we would swap and both would get another type of font for their projects.
The Night & Day font is something that you can have a lot of fun with and the letters are extremely easy to read. The only tiny little complaint that I have is the accents on the lower case "J", "K", "Q" and "T". These and rip, tear or get bent easily and if you are working with a thinner paper it can render it completely useless. Not everyone is going to like the style of the Night & Day; Sizzix offers a lot of different alphabet packs but most of them are in the hundred dollar range. You can get them on sale from time to time or check online for specials. I liked it as soon as I saw it and have gotten my moneys worth from it. It's nice to be able to make the letters I want when I want as well as swapping them with people who have other alphabet sets.
