Pros:Very effective right out of the box (with proper placement)
Cons:Replacement items expensive. Ensure you get the right sized model for your property.
The Bottom Line: I would recommend this, but ensure you get the right sized model, and keep in mind the price of replacement items when making your decision.
I can't help but feel that this product is the outdoors equivalent of an inkjet printer: the consumable items will end up far surpassing the cost of the item itself. I ended up purchasing the SV-15, which provides 1/2 acre coverage. I should have held out for the SV-35 (if I knew I would only have to wait 2 weeks, I would have).
The replacement sticky-traps, which stick to the outside of the SkeeterVacs main body, are really just giant fly-strips. The mosquitos are attracted to the SkeeterVac by the carbon dioxide and the attractant (octenal?), and then get stuck to the sticky paper. I have had some difficulty getting the trap on the body easily. And once the SkeeterVac is running, you get surrounded by the little buggers, and trying to get this sticky contraption on can be annoying. I ended up stapling the thing together to put it over the body. I don't know how Blue Rhino can justify charging $30 Cdn for 2 replacement traps, but since they work so effectively in capturing mosquitos, I guess I don't have much of a choice.
I have been running mine for almost 3 weeks now (I live in New Brunswick, Canada, and the mosquitos are very aggressive here) and I have had to change the trap once already, and after moving it around to the front of my house (I have 1+ acres, with about half of the area wooded) the second trap is half full in about 5 days. I expect I will have to change the propane tank soon (I think it's supposed to be good for 2 - 3 weeks.....), and the attractant is good for 60 days.
Overall, it seems to be working very well so, and hopefully after the breeding cycle has been broken, I'm hoping that I can send my little girls out into the yard after dinner without being feasted on by 'skeeters.
