| celindsay's Full Review: SkeeterVac |
We have had the SV-35 for almost two weeks now and it has been working great. I react very badly to mosquito bites and they have been so bad here in Southern Wisconsin that I could barely go outside. We picked the Skeetervac after reading reviews here and elsewhere and because it does not need to be connected to a power source. From what I read, it seemed to be more reliable than the Mosquito Magnet and was significantly cheaper. Although we have only used it for two weeks, we are already able to enjoy our yard again.
The location for the Skeetervac is important. It didn't catch too many mosquitoes in the first area we put it but, after we moved it closer to some bushes in the yard, it was almost immediately surrounded by mosquitoes. Since then, we have caught hundreds, if not thousands of mosquitoes. The machine catches insects in two ways: the first is with a sticky TacTrap paper and the other is by sucking them up with a vacuum into a trap where they quickly dessicate. It attracts the mosquitoes using CO2 provided by propane and also by an attractant. The amount of attractant released can be adjusted depending on the area you have it set up in to maximise success. We set ours to the bushes and woodland setting and it seems to be doing the job very well.
When we first got it, my husband was looking forward to the body count but rapidly gave up trying to track that as the machine was too efficient for him to keep up. He got a surprise the first time he emptied the vacuum trap as he didn't think it was very full but when he pulled it out, he discovered it is W-shaped and the chamber which is not visible from the outside was full. Currently, we are emptying the trap almost daily because it fills up so quickly.
We haven't had to replace our TacTrap yet as the vacuum trap seems to be where most of the mosquitoes are turning up for us. I did purchase additional TacTraps and attractant but we have not needed those yet and we have not had to replace the propane yet either.
So far, we are very happy with our Skeetervac and I think it was well worth the money. In our experience, it does exactly what it claims to do. We paid $295 for our Skeetervac. We were very fortunate because we actually ordererd the SV27 but the company we ordered it from (Yardiac.com) was backordered and offered us the SV-35 for the same price. This company really knows how to provide customer service! Regular price runs around $350. The propane tank adds around $50 and additional attractant bait and tactraps are around $15.
I would definitely recommend this product. For me, it is cost effective as I am weighing it up against doctor copays and prescriptions to deal with bite reactions. For "normal" people, it probably depends on how much you hate mosquitoes!
