After reading all of the good reviews at eopinions, I had high hopes for the Skeeter Vac. I live in South Carolina and, and we have lots of aggressive mosquitoes. They especially love my family for some reason. We cannot be outside for more than a minute before we start getting bitten. We have to completely cover ourselves with DEET because if we miss one single spot, the mosquitoes will find it. I didn't expect the Skeeter Vac to eliminate all the mosquitoes - I just hoped it would cut down on their numbers enough to spare us some bites or allow us to step outside for a few minutes without being swarmed.
I got the latest model (stainless steel, wheels, sticky paper, special attractant lights and scent, covers 1 acre)from Sam's for about $250. I tried it out for 10 days and only caught 2 mosquitoes in the mesh trap. About 6 others "accidentally" got caught by the sticky paper, but that wasn't very impressive since there were about 100 other non-mosquito bugs stuck as well. I tried the Skeeter Vac all around my house, hoping I could find a good spot. I tried it with and without the octenol.
It didn't work no matter where I put it.
I took it back to Sam's and got my money back. The clerk said they had had several returned. I then went to Home Depot and got the Mosquito Magnet 1/2 acre model for about the same price. I decided to try it first without the octenol. I have been using the Magnet for the past 10 days and have been catching 10-20 mosquitoes per day and very few other bugs.
