reasonfaith's Full Review: Skin Care Smooth Away Hair Removal
Smooth Away according to the late-night info commercials removes hair instantly and pain free. When I found this product in the Starcrest catalog for a mere 7 dollars, it was time to give it a try.
The package arrived in a little box about 4 inches wide by 7 inches tall in contemporary colors of green and pink. The plastic carrying case is green with two little pink applicators shaped like mini-sandals and the dark grey exfoliators come in large (for body) and small (for face) about five of each size.
The first thing to hit you is the the STOP note placed squarely in front and center telling you to read the enclosed instructions carefully prior to use. If you are one of those folks who toss these alerts aside, you will want to follow the manufacturers' instructions when it comes to products like this dealing with health - especially new products which have not been on the market very long.
Smooth Away calls the miracle working sandpaper "flex-crystal hair removal pads" and they ask that you make sure the skin is clear of creams, cosmetics or ointments before use. Residue and dust must also be removed from the pads. You peel the backing from the pads so that the sticky adhesive can be aligned with the holding pads which look like itty-bitty plastic sandals with bands that go over the hand or finger.
Smooth Away asks you to "gently buff in circular motions" and I would follow this advice. Rubbing, side strokes and pressing do not work and may possibly do damage to sensitive skin due to abrasion. It works like a fingernail file or foot-care file, but the grain is much finer. You can see the skin exfoliating and the dust and hairs collecting on the pad and they are remarkably removed from your body. It works for men and women, but I would not use this on children under any circumstances nor would I advise it for people with sensitive skin problems. The warning label also cautions against use for people with diabetes for some reason and it is not to be used on head hair or beards.
It works best on shorter (less than 1/4 inch) hairs, but I did not see any difference between the fine hairs or course hairs on the legs. It does not work very well around knees or other curved areas and the instructions do ask that you practice over flat surface areas.
Smooth Away warns not to remove the old pads for replacement with any kind of oily substance. You do not need any water, soap or other shaving aids to help do the job - it works well all by itself. The only downside is that you will want to rinse the area thoroughly when done to remove any excess dust and you are advised to apply moisturizer. The product left a tingly feeling on my skin after use which was a little disturbing, but it did remove all the hair effortlessly and took only 15 minutes to get me bathing-suit ready.
The product advertises no pain (true), no chemicals (nice to know) and no razor burn (or cuts I might add) which is great for those who like to hit the beach or pool right away. The product is made in China, but distributed by Idea Village in Wayne, New Jersey.
I purchased Smooth Away through one of my favorite household product catalogs, Starcrest of California which can be found online at http://www.starcrest.com or by calling 1-800-551-2843. Starcrest often offers free shipping and free gifts with minimum purchases. I got a pack of free ballpoint pens plus a free hand-cranking flashlight which you squeeze with one hand rather than turning a handle.
