tumtum's Full Review: Amanda Quick - Slightly Shady
I'm a huge Amanda Quick fan. I've read all the books that she wrote under this and other names. However, I'm sorry to say that I was a little disappointed in her latest historical romance novel.
When Lavinia Lake and Tobias March first met, he was busy kicking her out of her antiquities shop and destroying her merchandise. Naturally, Tobias claims that this was all for her safety but Lavinia was determined to blame all her misfortunes on Tobias.
After that unfortunate incident in Italy, Tobias and Lavinia met again in London. Over a corpse. It appears that in the past couple of months, Lavinia had been blackmail by Holton Felix. Holton had somehow come into the possession of a valet's diary that contained all sorts of juicy details. Naturally, Tobias was in search of the same diary. You see, Tobias was the equivalent of a private detective, and he had a client most interested in locating that same diary.
Given the latest circumstances, Tobias manage to convince Lavinia that it would be in their best interests to work as a team. So starts a shaky partnership filled with mistrusts and secrets....
The plot was engaging and the twists and turns had me guessing about the culprit's identity right until the end. However, I couldn't help but compare A. Quick's latest venture with her previous novels, and found it disappointing.
The plot was there, the characters were mildly engaging, but there was absolutely no spark between the two of them. In fact, the entire book read more like a mystery novel rather than a romance! If not for the (very) few snippets of moments between the two lead characters, I didn't get the idea that they were falling in love at all.
Needless, the love scenes between the two lead characters were also very disappointing. There was no great passion or even attraction between the two. It felt as though the love scenes were written as a last minute afterthought more than anything else.
Overall, this book is not up to the usual standard for Amanda Quick. I would only recommend it for devoted Amanda Quick fans.
