Like many people, I made a New Year's Resolution to lose weigh t and get in shape. I am fortunate that I have the help of a personal trainer. I am not only exercising, but following the prescribed eating plan as well. This plan requires eating 6 small meals a day and recommends using meal replacement bars and shakes as a quick alternative to preparing so many meals. I am out to try as many as possible. First up is Slim-Fast High Protein Peanut Granola Bar.

While there is obviously a lot of added vitamins and minerals, the actual ingredients don't much resemble food to me. But looking at the ingredients in other meal replacement bars, Slim Fast isn't the only company to pump out highly processed bars. But, in trying to following my new eating plan I bought some anyway.
I chose these Slim Fast bars because they are one of the few that aren't chocolate flavored. I've tried a good number of these bars in the past and I never seem to really enjoy the chocolate. Slim-Fast High Protein bars provide a reasonable balance between 20g of carbs (2g fiber, 10g sugar) and 15g of protein. Equality between grams of protein and carbohydrates is something I have been instructed to search out. These 1.69 oz meal replacement bars also only have 200 calories, but 7g of fat (including 2.5g saturated fat and 0g trans fat).
And How are They?
These tan bars are a decent size about 4 1/2" X 1" and over 1/2" thick, mostly of puffed crisp with a layer of frosting on top. Peanut Granola may be their name, but they have more of a coffee flavor to me. I actually like it, far more than I think I would like the inevitable fake peanut butter taste that I expected. The frosting is sweet and the crisps are pleasantly crunchy without being crumbly. These are by no means gourmet anything, but comparing them to other meal replacement bars I think Slim-Fast High Protein Peanut Granola Bar taste much better than a lot of the others I have tried.
I use the bars for either my mid-morning meal or my mid-afternoon meal. Although the package claims to control hunger for up to 4 hours, I find that I start getting hungry in a little over 2 hours. That works out fine since I am supposed to be eating every 2-3 hours. I can't imagine these bars being enough to work as a meal replacement in a traditional 3 meal a day world, but as a large snack for a couple of hours Slim-Fast High Protein Peanut Granola Bar do the job.
Price is also something that won me over. The first time I went shopping I was surprised at how expensive meal replacement bars can be; $2 - $2.50 each is the norm. A box of five Slim-Fast High Protein Peanut Granola Bars is $6 in my grocery store, a lot less than most others.
I'm giving everything I have to keep my New Year's Resolution. If Slim-Fast High Protein bars make it easier to adjust to my new eating program, they are worth every penny. I do wish the ingredient list had a few more recognizable ingredients, but they taste good and the carbs and protein are pretty well balanced. Slim-Fast High Protein Peanut Granola Bar are on my "keep" list.
