nak55's Full Review: Sling Media Slingbox (SB100-100) TV Input
I purchased the Slingbox Pro from Best Buy for $250. The wife wanted to buy an under-counter tv for the kitchen so I started looking at the Slingbox. Basically, here is everything it solves for us: 1) There's now a kitchen TV with satelite stations, 2) I can watch TV in the living room while the kid is hogging the tv, 3) I don't have to miss the game if I'm working on a garage or backyard project, 4) We can set the TIVO if we are out of town.
I had a little more difficulty in setting it up, but my issue was related solely to using McAfee on my portable. I emailed Slingbox to set up a call and they automatically sent me the McAfee fix without even knowing I used McAfee. I just had to turn McAfee off, change some settings, and then turn McAfee back on. I was dreading the 2 hour tech call, especially since Slingbox is only available from 7 to 7 PST on weekdays. With the easy fix, I am on my way. I also wasn't too thrilled about running ethernet from the receiver all the way to my router.
After the first hour, I'm impressed. It does what it says it'll do. Picture looks pretty good with very little choppiness. Using the remote (tv remote) on screen is very easy. Best of all, it has a list of favorite channel buttons at the bottom of the screen. It's actually easier to use then a normal remote.
I almost went with the Sony since it now has the ability to receive with a tv and not just a computer, but at $230 in addition to the receiver box. It looks like Sling is coming out with this feature as well. After reading all the reviews from various sources it looked like Sling was the better solution. Even when I talking with the Sony Only guys, they didn't exude much confidence in the Sony solution. I'm glad I went with the Sling.
