| maggiekl's Full Review: Slingo |
I received Slingo as a Christmas present last Christmas. I have always been a fan of electronic hand held games, and of slot machines so this one was right up my alley!
When you start the game off you have a 5x5 board of numbers. The numbers run like bingo, in the first column the numbers are between 1 and 15, in the second column they are between 16 and 30 etc.. You push the spin button and you get 5 numbers which are shown at the very bottom of the screen. One number for each column.
You check if the number you got in your spin matches any of the numbers you have in the board. If you do you move to that number using arrows and push enter. When you are done checking and covering the numbers in that spin you spin again to get new numbers. The goal is to 'cover up' all the numbers in your board. Every time you cover up a whole row or column you get bonus points and even more bonus points if you cover up the whole board.
While playing you will come across jokers, when you get one of these you can cover up any number that isn't already covered up. You may also get gold coins, these give you extra points but you cannot cover a number in the column that you get the coin that turn. You may also unfortunately get a devil, these little stinkers seem to always turn up when you are doing well LOL. If you do get a devil he steals half of your points. You also can get free spins throughout the game, these free spins come in handy at the end of the game which I will explain next.
You get 16 free spins in this game. If you don't have your board covered in 16 spins you can get 4 more spins at the end of the game but unless you got free spins throughout the game you will have to pay for them. The cost of these spins is as follows: The first is $500, the second is $1000, the third is $1500 and the last is $2000. There is a little strategy with these spins, if you know you are going to need all 4 spins it is wise to save your spins (lets say you have 2 free spins) for the last 2 spins and save yourself $3500 opposed to $1500 using them on the first 2 spins.
The only part of this game that took me a few turns to figure out is how to use the free spins. After you push spin to use one of the pay spins a screen pops up to show you how much that spin will cost, after a few seconds that screen goes away. When the main screen comes back up you have to hit enter and the free spins will start blinking, when this happens you are set up to use the free spin. If you don't do this you will pay for the spin instead of using one of your free ones. Once we figured this out we didn't have a single problem playing the game, except for getting that devil!!
Everyone in my family enjoys playing this game and it is great for in the car or when we go camping and the kids can get bored. You can turn the sound off if it is being played in the car or next to someone who is watching tv or playing a different game. The batteries in this game also last a long time, I think we put new batteries in once during the year we played it. It has an automatic shut off after the game is not played for a bit.
This would be a great game for almost anyone on your Christmas list!
