It is a fact that seven out of ten Americans don’t get enough magnesium in their diet.

The lack of proper magnesium levels could be due to limited foods that contain magnesium. Nutritional sources of magnesium include fish, legumes, seeds, nuts, whole grains, and green leafy vegetables.
When I presented with afib at my first visit with an electrophysiologist, he prescribed Slow-Mag. This brand of magnesium chloride is combined with calcium for better absorption. Magnesium deficiency increases the risk of an abnormal heart rhythm and Slow-Mag helps to maintain a normal heart rhythm as well as good cardiovascular health.
Slow-Mag is packaged in a bright blue and white box with orange accents. Inside the box, you will find a white plastic bottle with 60 magnesium chloride tablets along with calcium. Each tablet of Slow-Mag measures approximately 11/16” in diameter. The tablets are enteric coated allowing the magnesium to pass through the stomach and be absorbed in the small intestines. By this slow release, there is usually no stomach upset.
My electrophysiologist prescribed one tablet of Slow-Mag daily, even though the package directions suggest taking two tablets once or twice daily. Diarrhea can be a side affect of taking excessive amounts of magnesium. Being I have IBS, my doctor felt that one tablet daily was sufficient. He prescribed Slow-Mag, for magnesium has a major role in heart health as well as rhythm disturbances. On the occasion I do have an afib episode, I increase my intake of magnesium chloride.
Magnesium should be taken in combination with calcium in a 2:1 ratio and Slow-Mag comes very close to this ratio. Each serving of Slow-Mag tablets contains 238 mg. of magnesium chloride and 238 mg. of calcium.
Most doctors prescribe magnesium oxide for their patients. This is a less expensive form of magnesium, but is not absorbed as well as magnesium chloride. A study confirmed that magnesium oxide achieves only 4% fractional absorption. This is why I don’t mind paying more for Slow-Mag.
Besides magnesium being beneficial for heart health and heart rhythm, it is also beneficial for other conditions as well. Some health benefits of taking magnesium is the regulation of body temperature, detoxification, and promoting healthy bones and teeth. Magnesium helps to prevent constipation, hypertension, and migraines. It can also control blood glucose levels.
In women, magnesium provides relief from symptoms of menopause and PMS. Hear that, guys? Go out and buy your better half a bottle of Slow-Mag! You will be glad you did!
