| aes_sedai's Full Review: Small Pet Ferret Treats: NBone Ferret Chew Treats |
N-Bones Ferret Chew Treats are a pliable, all-natural, edible treat for ferrets, more or less in the same league as Hyperfur Cheweasels and Marshalls Superchew Edible Toys. However, whereas Cheweasel and Superchew are rubbery, flat, and disk-shaped, N-Bones are long, thin, cylindrical in shape (like a pencil), and are pliable rather than rubbery. Like the other two, though, N-bones treats are easily digestible by ferrets, and there is no danger of intestinal blockage.
There are many treats on the market manufactured especially for ferrets; however, of the many available, I have two main decisions to make for each: 1) Is the product worthy of my attention (and money), i.e., am I willing to feed this to my fur family because it has some nutritional, healthful, or other benefit to them? And 2) Will the little buggers actually LIKE them? The second option is always so much trickier than the first, because, while people claim that cats are finicky, let me tell you: They aint got nuttin on ferrets! N-Bones are one of the few treats upon which all of us (human and mustelid) agree. I like them for a number of reasons; one of which is the price. They range from about $1.79 to $3 for a 1.87-oz package (which contains 8-10 treats) (as with anything else, check Google.com for price comparisons before buying!). Secondly, there are no artificial additives, no colorings, no preservatives added; they basically are made from soy protein and gelatin, with a few other all-natural ingredients added for flavor; they also contain Taurine, an element necessary for heart & eye health. (Nutritionally, the breakdown is Protein: 35%, Fat: 6%; Fiber: 2.5 %.) Thirdly, they help aid in tartar removal to keep ferret teeth and gums healthy (yes, you still need to brush your ferrets teeth, but these do seem to help my ferrets teeth). Fourthly, the long, pencil-thin shape makes them easily portable for all of my ferret crew. (The pliability of them reminds me a lot of the old Pillsbury Space Food Sticks, a snack that was available about a thousand years ago in the 1970s similar consistency, shape, and color; I havent yet tasted one for the ultimate test, though.) Finally, my ferrets go nuts over these things. I have to give my big boy, Indy, his first, so that he can immediately run away and hide his; as soon as he takes off, the others get theirs, hopefully to reach a safe hidey-hole before Big Brother locates them and tries to roust their treats from them. Then, a long period of hisses, squeals, feet pattering frantically back and forth as each ferret steals back his or her treat, followed by Big Brother Indy again locating them, re-stealing, and so forth
eventually, though, each one gets his or her treat and settles down comfortably to nosh. Its more a fun time than a stressful one, because in spite of the stolen treats, everyone always seems to get some, regardless.
One more reason I like these so much: They are highly recommended by many other ferret lovers, and remain one of the most popular, safe treats available.
N-Bones, overall, are a wonderful way to treat your fur-baby. They have nutritional value; they are safe and easily digestible; they help clean ferrets teeth between brushings; they are easy for ferrets to carry; and they are affordable. I think my only complaint is that they are only available in chicken flavor!
