Pros: Helps me heal, and feels great, providing therapeutic relief.
Cons: Slightly expensive, but definitely worth it, a good quality product.
(1/11/09 UPDATE: My Smart Temp Pad sprung a small leak (hole in the corner). Am not sure if it was something I did or if I overheated it in my microwave. Please use caution!)
I bought a KAZ Smart Temp Portable Reusable Heating Pad Cold Compress when I knew I was going into the hospital. Someone had recommended that I buy one to help keep myself comfortable while recovering and I thought it sounded like a good idea.
Now that I'm recuperating at home, I decided to put the KAZ Heating Pad to the test. I opened the box and read the directions which said to warm the KAZ Heating Pad fora full four minutes in a 1000 watt microwave oven. I thought that seemed like somewhat of a long heating time, but followed the instructions anyway. (Check your microwave oven first to make sure it is the correct wattage. You may have to adjust the heating time to assure the therapeutic bag heats up properly but does not overheat.)
The KAZ Heating Pad is made with something called "Thermal Matrix" which holds the desired temperature longer than other similar products. The weight of the plastic bag is substantial and is filled with this Thermal Matrix gel which is pliable. The plastic bag is thick and the gel feels thick. I used this two nights in a row, and it easily held the warm therapeutic temperature which helped relieve my pains for 45-60 minutes...without reheating. I have an old heating pad and it also requires heating by the microwave oven. It held the warmth for only about 15 minutes, so believe me, this is a huge improvement. As I said, the bag is filled just right, and is not skimpy at all like the old (cheaper) bag I used to use. This makes a big difference too, because with the old bag/pad, I found that I was shifting the gel around to try to maximize the part that was warm.
I had strained my back once while bending over in the attic for an extended period of time. This pad sure would have helped me with my back pain that time. For example, if you have a shoulder ache, as I did, I was able to simply place the entire moldable heating pad over my shoulder for pain relief.
I also like the fact that there are no cords or plugs which get in the way. No electricity required, this is a nice, large pad measuring 9.5 x 16 inch pad.
It heats in microwave and cools in the freezer. I haven't actually tried using it in the freezer yet, since it's pretty chilly outside these days, but have no doubt that it will perform well, since the hot therapy does so well.
This heating pad helps to give relief from: "sports injuries, back or muscle pain, arthritis, or cramps".
Another well-thought-out feature too is that after heating, you then place the plastic pouch into a soft (blue) washable cloth cover which folds over to keep the plastic bag inside. It also helps by providing a layer between your skin and the warmth. This is included when you buy your KAZ Heating Pad.
Also included is a white strap which helps secure the pad in place if you need to use it on your back for example and you are moving around to get comfortable.
