As I have previously told you in a former article I finally ventured out last night and made to my favorite place in retail, OfficeMax. While I was there I was picking up some new items, like a “Wite Out” that will work (we’ll get to that in another article), some index files, a new pen (I only like one kind even if they do cost a fortune), and lastly a desk top organizer for my new desk. It just so happens that most of these items were in Epinions and no one had done reviews on them so I thought I would start with “Smead A-Z Self Tab 4 x 6 Manilla 1/5 Tab Cut 25 Set.” Now I can’t understand for the life of me why someone hasn’t done an epinion on such an exciting topic but don’t you worry, that is what guided me to Epinions in the first place. So let me share with you my thoughts and maybe even make Index cards interesting for you.
Charles Smead in 1906 founded Smead Manufacturing Company and he started the business with one product, the “bandless file,” which is still on the market today. He set up shop in Hastings, Minnesota and had six employees. Unfortunately, ten years after Charles Smead had founded Smead Manufacturing Company, he passed on. One of his employees named P.A. Hoffman decided to purchase the company with the help of his son Harold Hoffman. In 1955 Harold Hoffman passed away, his wife Mrs. E.C. Hoffman began to run the company. As she got older, in 1998, she passed the company on to her daughter Sharon Lee Avent who had already been an employee for thirty-five years there.
Sadly, her mother passed on in 1999. Sharon Lee Avent remains the “Office of President and CEO” of Smead Manufacturing Company.

Along with Sanford Ink Corporation as well as many other businesses in the Office Supply Industry, Smead Manufacturing Company is also involved in Partners in Hope. Partners in Hope was founded in 1913 in Duarte, California in the hope to find the cause and the cure for life threatening diseases, such as cancer. In fact for 2003, Sharon Lee Avent of Smead Manufacturing Company will be honored at the “Spirit of Life Award Dinner” for the continuing contributions that Smead Manufacturing Company has made to Partners in Hope.
Onto the Product, SMEAD Alphabetic Guide Set for Index Card in 6” x 4” Format
I bought the Alphabetic Guide Set for the Index Cards in order to organize some of my clutter on my desk. The cards are 6 inches horizontally and 4 inches in vertically, however, if you include the tab as well they are actually 4 ½ inches upright, but who is counting. Smead Manufacturing Company makes the cards with colorful tabs but I bought I the plain Manilla Set in order to save expenses. The cards are in sets of five leading up to 25 cards all together. The last card combines X, Y, Z which some what annoys me, because each letter is just as important as the next. However I can get over that. The cards themselves are quite sturdy and about 1/10th of a centimeter thick. The set is made of recycled components as well which always puts a smile on my face.
I am glad that purchased this set at the cost of $2.69. It was well worth the buy as it is well-built and I know will last a long time. The letters are in bold print about a little over a ½ a centimeter in width and ¾ of a centimeter in length. You won’t be mistaking the M for N and they are also all in CAPITAL letters. I feel confident that this product will serve me well in the future and will not deteriorate over time

In summary, the Smead Alphabetic Guide Set for Index Card in 6” x 4” Format was a great buy at what I felt was a reasonable price for the length of endurance it obviously has. Smead Manufacturing Company has been in business for about 97 years now and I feel they have been able perfect their line of products. Smead Manufacturing Company that once started with six employees now has over 2,600 from Wisconsin, Utah, Texas, Ohio, Georgia, and of course Minnesota. Smead Manufacturing Company has designed a corporation that “provides quality products that best serve the filing needs of our customers,” and they have done just that.
I also feel warm inside knowing that my money is contributing to the wellness of others.
