Smead® End Tab File Folders provide a popular choice for medical, dental, financial and insurance open shelf filing systems.
I scour the shelves of our local discount outlet and have been rewarded with broken boxes of many usable materials for my classroom, including a nice supply of 11 point manila or colored stock file folders. These end tab folders are also available as 14 point or 11 point ivory stock.
While End Tab File Folders from Smead have value in the medical or other office setting for allowing control of the filing system including easier access to nicely organized documents through on the shelf filing; the folders as used in the classroom may be used for holding documents, but are as likely to be utilized for many more activities.
I like the size of the legal size tabbed folders; the approximately 12.5 X 10 inch folders are ideal for teacher made file folder activity materials including games, language arts work, math materials as well as for using as student portfolio for corralling paperwork during the quarter prior to meeting with parents to discuss grades and work accomplished.
I have a series of folders which have been transformed into simple line games having boxes, or stamped figures or even just a trailing line along the margin crossed now and then with a dot or slash. Little Learners use the game folders for practicing word families, sounds, word building and the like. Most of the games follow a simple format, toss a die, move marker along the dots, slashes, stamped item or whatever, stop on the spot get a card from the stack of cards and begin building a word, reading a word, saying sounds etc.
Little Partners work together, and often change how games are played, which is fine. Small children eagerly engaged, sounding words, reading together, proclaiming we both won at the end of the activity is not a bad 15 minutes.
One box of the Smead End Tab File Folders I found at the outlet store have been put into use as covers for small books we are using as we study calendar, time, money and the like. At the end of the term these well worn books will be going home with Little Learners.
I have been fortunate to be able to find several damaged boxes of very usable materials at the outlet store. Some of The End Tab Folders have been used to provide language arts writing aids. I taped two together, glued word lists, word family groups, notes, vocabulary lists and the like and then laminated them. These writing aids along with dictionaries and other books are available for Little Learner usage as they search for words to alphabetize, use in sentences or write stories.
I particularly like these End Tab, Shelf-Master® Folders from Smead. I find The Shelf-Master® are especially well made, durable, and handy featuring a reinforced double thick tab provided for extra strength, embossed lines allowing for easy label placement as well as an undercut front panel for easier label readability. Depending on the specific folders tabs may feature one-third cut with 4 inch high tabs practical for use in overhead filing cabinets others feature a front panel 9 inch to 9.5 inch high with an undercut ¼ inch deep useful for attaching labels which are sold separately.
Recycling is something we teach per state standards, and I do per my own value system. Little Learners in my classroom are soon looking for ways to use empty cartons, and the like. The fact that these folders are made with 10% post-consumer recycled content, fits right into our program.
I find Smead® products on the whole, and Smead® End Tab Folders in particular, to be well made, durable and functional for office and classroom.

In the mid-1990s, Smead was the 18th-largest privately held industrial company in the state of Minnesota, and in 1996, Working Woman magazine ranked Smead as the 31st-largest women-owned business in the United States.
Smead's primary product line is office filing products, from manila folders, expanding files, and top tab and end tab filing systems to color-coded indexing systems, records management software, high-density mobile shelving, and electronic tracking, imaging, and bar code technologies. Other typical Smead products include ring binders, medical X-ray jackets, steel rotary filing components, file pockets, hanging files, and report covers.
The Smead Manufacturing Company was founded in 1906 by Charles Smead, a former salesman for the St. Louis-based wholesale office supply firm of G. D. Barnard and Co. Regarded by his employer as "one of the best men on the road," Smead had begun casting about for an alternative to the then standard practice of securing office file envelopes with rubber bands, which almost always deteriorated before the envelope itself wore out.
Smead's innovation was the "bandless file," an envelope designed with durable metal clasps.
