With the recent purchase of another computer, a new monitor and printer, my small home office was in need of some organization which meant purchasing things that would store items like paper, art packs and invoices. I’d previously tried to order the Smead SpaceBox from a few online stores and was notified that they were out of stock. I finally managed to pick them up at Shoplet and can honestly say that this four drawer set is a true life saver. Not only are they stackable to save space but they will hold a variety of different items so you can avoid wasting time trying to track down things that you use often. I initially ordered one of these but plan on adding a few more of them to my next order if I can’t find them locally.

Smead SpaceBox Desktop Four Drawer Organizer

The concept of a desktop drawer styled organizer isn’t new, in fact I’ve had several similar items in the past but they all succumbed to my heavy hands slamming the drawers shut, getting knocked off the desk or just cracking from having too many things placed inside the drawers or stacked on top of the unit. The thing that separates this from others is that it is sturdier, has quiet open drawers and is made of a higher grade of plastic. As soon as I received my order I grabbed this out of the box and started ripping the plastic off of it to check it out and set it up on my desk. I was really impressed with the generous size of the drawers, recessed lip at the top of each drawer and absolute silence of the drawers when they were pulled open or pushed shut. Some of the others I have owned had an annoying grating sound when opening or closing the drawers and to some people that’s an insignificant thing but to me hearing that noise over and over again was just irritating.

This stylish and sleek looking organizer is great for papers, index cards, staplers, art supplies, invoices, envelopes and more – but it won’t store everything under the sun. Each drawer is only about two inches high so if you have something that’s higher than that, you’ll have to find some other way to store it. You can purchase an open top storage compartment that can be added to the top of this unit – perfect for large or over oversized items that you want to keep out of the way but not in a drawer. This is twelve inches wide and fifteen inches deep – perfect for copy paper and stationery. At the bottom middle of each drawer is a small hole, something that I was completely puzzled by until someone told me that this was for easy access to paper or items inside the drawer. Remove the drawer, pop your finger into the hole and it helps to push out the item. This is something that I doubt I will have a use for but at least I know what it is for.

Overall this is a great size for most desktops and will allow you to store a good bit inside the drawers. The fact that they are stackable increases their overall value and there are other types of storage bins that can be added to the top if you don’t have the need for more drawers. The only thing that I could possibly list as a down side is that it does tend to slide around a lot on certain desk surfaces. The desk in my office is wood but I have several small metal filing cabinets. When I tried this out on the metal cabinets it slid around more so than when on the wood surface, there are small felt protectors on the bottom however I opted to use poster putty on the bottom to secure it to the surface and eliminate having it move around when opening or closing the drawers.

Things To Know

This is a little more expensive than other brands but after trying others in the past I can say that the suggested retail price of $24.99 is well worth it for the quality you receive. If you are planning on ordering this online you should check it from top to bottom once it arrives to ensure that there are no cracked or damaged parts – something that could easily happen if it is being roughly handled while in transit. I haven’t seen this model at any of my local office supply stores but did ask the manager if he could order them. If you need a desktop drawer organizer that will accommodate larger items, this is also available in a three drawer system with a large bottom drawer. You can pick this up in four different colors – charcoal, gray, blue and green / teal however so far the online office supply stores have only been stocking the charcoal and gray versions.

The Bottom Line

While some people might balk at the price of this I think it is well worth the price and look forward to picking up a few more of them. This is going to be great for organizing the school projects for the boys, keeping small items in place and getting rid of clutter.
