Measuring Like Grandma – Now if I could only cook like her!

Written: Mar 06 '04
Pros:3 unique measuring spoons, long handles, make excellent gifts, fun item
Cons:engraving on the handles might not be the same depth on all spoons
The Bottom Line: In a pinch I’ll dash off a smidgen of something good to say for this Bottom Line.

My grandmother cooked like a dream. Cinnamon apple pies, chicken fricassee, meatloaf and oatmeal-date cookies. Mmmmm .... my mouth is watering just thinking about those dishes. Trying to duplicate my grandmother’s recipes is a challenge. At one point we watched every move she made while cooking. If something required a dash-of-this or a pinch-of-that, we measured each dash and pinch. And still we can’t duplicate my grandmother’s fabulous recipes. Maybe if we had owned the Smidgen set of 3 Measuring Spoons, it might have made a difference.

What Makes These Measuring Spoons Unique

The spoons come in three sizes: a Dash, a Smidgen, a Pinch. No more guess work. Let the measuring spoon doll out that pinch of salt for you.

* Dash = 1/8 teaspoon
* Smidgen = 1/32 teaspoon
* Pinch = 1/16 teaspoon

What They Look Like

The set comes with three different size measuring spoons. The spoons are made of stainless steel with a brushed matte finish. Each spoon is 4-inches long and is a 1/2-inch wide at its widest point, which is the end of the handle. Each handle end has an elongated hole. A silver metal ring, similar to a keychain ring, holds the three spoons together.

On the top side of each handle are engraved words in capital letters: Dash, Smidgen or Pinch. On my set, the engraved letters are not the same depth on each spoon. The wording for “Smidgen” is more deeply engraved than the wording on the other two spoons ... and the deeper engraving looks nicer. I’m not sure if it is done on purpose or not, but the Smidgen measuring spoon with the deeper engraving is the topmost spoon one sees when opening the package.

A nice packaging touch is that the middle measuring spoon is encased in clear plastic to keep it from touching the spoon on either side of it. The entire set of three spoons came in a small sealed clear plastic bag.

Who Would Use These Spoons?

Anyone with a sense of humor or who has a relative that measures in dashes and pinches will enjoy these small spoons. If you or someone you know thrives on accuracy, then look no further for measuring spoons that measure tiny amounts. These make excellent gifts, too. Friends and family smile when they open these unique measuring spoons.

Looking through some of the old cookbooks on my bookshelf, I’ve actually encountered recipes that call for a dash-of-this and a pinch-of-that. So these spoons will come in handy!

Likes

* Unique and Fun
* Great for measuring small amounts
* Long 4" handles reach deep into containers
* Easy to clean

Dislikes

I only mention this since I like continuity in a product. I wish all the engraved words on the spoon handles were the same depth.

Caring for These Measuring Spoons

Even though these spoons are dishwasher safe, I prefer to wash them by hand. For one thing, the measuring spoons are narrow and could easily become lost in a dishwashing machine. I can only imagine the grief that would cause! I hand wash my measuring spoons in Dawn liquid dishwashing soap with a non-abrasive sponge.

Purchasing

I purchased these measuring spoons from the Miles Kimball catalog for $3.99. I notice they are now on sale for $2.49. Miles Kimball also has the spoons for sale on their website mileskimball.com. Kitchenetc.com also sells these measuring spoons for $3.99.

Summary

The Smidgen set of 3 Measuring Spoons are not only fun but also practical. They make an excellent gift, too. If you are putting together a “thinking of you” gift, buy a nice mug and add these measuring spoons with a favorite coffee blend and flavoring. Or in a small mixing bowl, add these measuring spoons and a wire whisk with your favorite baking mix. They would also make a fun bookmark for a cookbook. And don’t forget to buy yourself a set, too. Every time I use one of these measuring spoons, I think of my grandmother. Now if only I could cook like her.

I hope you have found this review useful.
