I got this typewriter as a gift from my parents in high school. It is the one thing I used in high school more than any other thing. This is long before I got a computer. I still have the typewriter, but honestly use the computer all the time now. However, I won't get rid of it. I want it here just in case something goes wrong with the computer or if I just want to use it instead.

When you first get it you can do a self demonstration program to discover most popular features. This is done by pressing Code + Z. This will show you how the spell right dictionary, automatic correct and word-right autospell works.

With this typewriter you can create and store text to print later. You have different folders that you can save your work into and save for later. The typewriter will store 6,700 characters which is about 3 pages of double spaced text. You can use one file for all of the memory or you can divide it out up to eight different files. You can erase files when you no longer need them to make more room in your memory. It comes with a rechargeable battery which gives power to save your stored memory and format in cash of a power outage. To maintain your 90 day memory backup memory level you must leave the typewrite on for at least 24 hours every 90 day period. It doesn't matter if you are typing or if it is just sitting as long as it is turned on. Once in memory mode don't hit the return key at the end of a line unless you need a required return or want to put blanks in the text.

You can print out a draft copy to make sure that everything looks okay. The pitch can be changed at anytime to either 10, 12 or 15. You have the option to have 1, 1 1/2 or 2 spaces between each line. Your impression can be light, medium or hard.

This typewriter has the following options:

It has a spell-right dictionary. It will beep at a misspelled word. There is a correct key to automatically correct errors. You can use Word Find to help you find the incorrectly spelled word. Hit Code+F key and it will give you go back and point to the incorrect word.

The Word-Right Auto Spell checks for different errors such as: transpositions, omitted characters, extra characters, incorrect characters and phonetic substitutions. It then gives you different options and you can select the correct word and it will replace it within your text. To activate Auto Spell press the Code+Tab S key. It will beep and then with pop up on the screen 'thinking'. It will then give you other options.

You can make your own personal word list. If there are words that you type often and it is not in the dictionary simply put them in there. That way your typewriter will not beep at you every time you use those words. This is common for individual names, medical or scientific terms or foreign words. To add words to your personal list use Code+E Key. You can view your list by pressing Code+L Key.

WARNING Use the Smith Corona brand "H" ribbon for this typewriter. If you use another brand and something goes wrong with your typewriter your warranty is void. So BEWARE!

If your typewriter has some problems here are some things to check: lid closed all the way? ribbon need replacing? ribbon installed correctly? printwheel installed? print hammer locked?

Cleaning Tips:

Do NOT take the typewriter apart. To clean the printwheel use a small amount of alcohol on a q-tip and wipe clean with a dry cloth. To clean the platen wipe the surface with a clean cloth saturated in alcohol. To clean the keyboard, sponge with ammonia or a soap solution. DO NOT use household cleaners containing chlorinated compounds.

Safety Tips:
Use the correct electrical current (standard).
Avoid shock (no paper clips, screwdrivers, etc.)
Before reaching into carrier area turn on standby.
If they typewriter is dropped unplug before you pick it up.
Keep out of heat or humidity.
If liquids are spilled or splashed on it unplug immediately.

I have had this typewriter for 10 years now and it works just as good as when I first got it. I don't use it much now, but I know that it is there when I need it. It is one reliable, sturdy typewriter.
