| deadzone's Full Review: Smith No Fog Cloth |
For those of you who haven't read my other review on the itech 920 hockey face shield, I bought a visor cage combo about two months ago but had a great deal of problem with fogging. People gave me all sorts of advice on how to keep my visor clear including using toothpaste, dishwasher fluid, shampoo, windex, etc... but none of them worked very well. I went and tried various anti-fog products including the itech spray, fogzero, Smith no-fog cloth, and Fogtech. If you think all the anti-fog treatments are the same, keep reading.
This is actually the second product I tried in a string of anti-fog products. The no-fog cloth is pretty much what its name states. It comes in a plastic package with a white folded up cloth inside.
Out of all the anti-fogging products, this one has to be the easiest to apply and carry around. I think they would be especially good for snowboarders and skiers who may not want to drag a bottle with them onto the slopes. But I digress as I use this stuff for hockey. Application is as easy as wiping the cloth over your visor a few times. That's it! There's no buffing, spraying, or excessive rubbing required. I just gave my shield the once over and was ready to go. The cloth seems very soft too, so I didn't worry about scratching up my shield.
Of course, easy application means nothing if the product doesn't work. The first time I went out on the ice, I made the mistake of using Itech anti-fog spray along with the no-fog cloth. I thought the two together would be better than one alone. I fogged up within five minutes. Later on, I tested the no-fog cloth by itself and got dramatically different results. I found that the Itech spray actually made fogging worse by negating the effects of the no-fog cloth (Which is why I gave the Itech spray such a low score). I went out on the ice expecting to fog up in ten minutes like the time I used Fogzero. Surprisingly, I was fog free. Pleased with the results, I started skating harder and generating more heat. After about fifteen minutes, the fog started to build on my shield. It wasn't to the point where I couldn't see, but it was very noticeable. In order to keep my shield completely fog free, I had to wipe it down about four times in a forty-five minute session.
Even though the no-fog cloth didn't live up to my expectations, I still think it is a good product. For somebody who generates less heat, this would probably be perfect. The fog that does build up isn't as bad as the itech spray and fogzero. Also, each cloth only cost me a dollar, although they are normally three dollars at REI. The cloth will last you several uses though, and I would much rather pay for something that works than save money on something that doesn't.
