I went to S&W for the second time recently in NYC. I never judge a steakhouse by just one visit, but two visits can usually tell the story. The place was overcrowded both times, with chairback to chairback seating. I barely had room to move during the meal. Going to the restroom at any time during the meal was absolutely out of the question. The prices are pretty high even for NYC steaks.
The first time I went I ordered the filet mignon and it was average at best (definitely not worth the price). The second time I visited, I got the house special Porterhouse. Again, the steak was very average for the price. I think most steak eaters would be better off going to Luger's or Ruth's Chris for quality beef. On the positive side, the service was great. No need to call for more water. The wait staff was friendly and attentive, making the experience somewhat enjoyable despite the disappointing meal.
Positives: The seafood platter appetizer (great but pricey)
Excellent service staff
Negatives: Mediocre steaks
High prices
Serious overcrowding
