I've had to do business in New York City several times a year for the last 15 years. Not to be a NYC "basher" but there are other places in the world that I really enjoy better than NYC.... except for one thing (restaurants)... and one restaurant in particular (Smith and Wollensky). Whenever I'm in the city its S&W for dinner, sometimes two and three nights in a row!
The quality and quantity of the steaks is unbeatable, irregardless of price. I've had the filet mignon and porterhouse, always mammoth portions of thick tender meat cooked to perfection. The side dish of creamed spinach is really quite good.
The restaurant looks like a turn of the century American steakhouse, with professional waiters in starched white shortcoats that tend to your every need. The place is usually packed at dinnertime, so reservations are recommended... although I've actually been able to get seated on several occasions with a minimal wait without reservations.
If your taste is for weeds, seeds, and sprouts for dinner this is not the place for you. If your tastes run to good old steak and potatoes this place is your nirvana.
Enjoy!
